Natural Remedies for Cat Attack Wounds -- Instead of Antibiotics

Wheat grass juice, garlic, Echinacea-Goldenseal capsules help the body knock out the infection while keeping the good bacteria in tact. No side effects. Good for you all around. Applicable to other infection scenarios as well.

Saturday night, my daughter, Hailee, was attacked by a wild cat, which repeatedly bit and scratched her right forearm.

Monday morning, Tim (step-father) and I took her in to a medical clinic to be looked at by a doctor. Upon seeing the redness spreading more than four inches up her arm from the deepest bite wound, the doctor was very concerned, and said we needed to treat this with the most aggressive antibiotics, including a shot for a type of antibiotic that otherwise would be destroyed by the digestive system if taken orally. Without such treatment, he warned us that there is a possibility she could loose her arm.

The doctor explained that pretty much all cats have a certain bacteria on their teeth, Pasteurella multocida, which can be very bad for humans, especially if it gets past the skin barrier. Superficial wounds are easier to clean and disinfect.

Inasmuch as we were already two days into the infection, I was inclined to go with the medical recommendation, so after some arm-twisting by Cheri, Tim agreed to go along with that as well, and we went the antibiotic route.

But knowing what I know now, after some additional information, I wish we had taken a different route.

The problem with medical antibiotics is they kill all the bacteria -- good and bad -- and the body has many good bacteria that are symbiotic. Those in the gut are just one set, and are more easily replaced with probiotics. It can take years for the body to recover from an antibiotic assault. It's not good for the immune system.

My mom, who is very gifted in herbal/natural remedies, had a very similar thing happen about three years ago. She was attacked by a cat, which repeatedly bit and scratched her, probably more severely than what happened to Hailee.

My mom didn't use antibiotics. She got some wheat grass (already grown from a local supplier), juiced it, along with carrots and spinach juice (other raw, organic vegetables would work, too). And she also ingested a whole clove of raw garlic (helped with some bread). She also took some Echinacea-Goldenseal combination capsules. She kept this treatment going for several days, while it was healing.

You want to do the wheat grass juice on an empty stomach. And it's good to swish the juice around in your mouth for a bit before swallowing it. That helps the stomach know what's coming. (This is true of all foods and drinks, by the way.) You need a special juicer for wheat grass, too.

She told me about another time when she had three insect bites on her left forearm. Two days later her arm looked like Popeye's. She said they were out shopping, and she saw a red mark going up her arm, and she started feeling light-headed.

They went in to see a doctor, who prescribed antibiotics and antihistamine.

She took the antihistamine as recommended, but tore up the antibiotic prescription and instead went with a large glass of wheatgrass juice, garlic, and Echinacea-Goldenseal capsules.

She said that the next day, her arm was back down to normal size.

Over the years, I've heard a lot of great stories about the benefits of wheat grass juice. Good stuff.

One of these days, the medical establishment will integrate these great remedies into their regimens, but that's not likely in the present environment which is focused on money-making regimens and kickbacks.

P.S. This unexpected situation with Hailee has put us back financially, at a bad time, with me travelling, starting tonight. So any extra donations you might kick in would be appreciated. Thanks. By the way, had we gone with the natural remedies only, and not gone the antibiotic route with Hailee, our bill would have been 1/10 or less, and she would have been more healthy coming out of it.
