MARIANA LIGHTS: Doctoral dissertation launching regarding exotic free energy
based urban lighting
A dialogue I had with Brazilian, Mariana *** about her
proposed doctoral thesis topic on the impact that exotic free energy devices
could have on city lighting, enabling the personality of the city to come
through like art, much more so than what is presently available.

dialogue below. This is to illustrate conceptually how the rollout of
exotic free energy technologies could significantly broaden the scope and
variety that urban scenography could deploy. Posting this, I think of an
analogy that can be drawn. At first, when I was chatting with Mariana, she
had a profile photo she had taken with the webcam, with her face half way
out of field, and no smile, almost depressed looking. I encouraged her to
update her photo, having remembered her as being so much more pretty. So
also, might we say that the present face that most cities of the world
convey today is not as beautiful as they could be or actually are in
For any newcomers to our site, what I mean by "free
energy" is devices that harvest the wheelwork of nature. This
includes conventional modalities like solar, wind, hydro,
geothermal, tidal, etc. By "exotic", we are referring to
modalities that have not yet been acknowledged as legitimate by the
mainstream, such as cold fusion, electromagnetic overunity, magnet
motors, zero point energy, etc. There are at least 25
genres of each: conventional and exotic.
While the energy is free for the taking from nature, the devices
that do the harvesting are not free; but for the most part, the
exotics are poised to be much cheaper than even polluting sources,
such as oil, gas, and coal.

On July 3, 2013, I had a short layover scheduled in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on my way
to Porto Alegre to speak about exotic free energy technologies at the 13th
International Conference on Free Software. The gate situation there was very
odd. If I remember right, you had to do down an escalator to the ground floor,
where there were like ten gates departing from three portals via busses. The
waiting area had a few seats, but was mainly more like an open lobby. It was
nothing like the usual gate where there is a dedicated number for the gate, with
seats where you can site while waiting for the plane to board.
As I walked back and forth with a puzzled look on my face, wondering what the
heck was going on, I went up to a friendly-looking lady and asked if she spoke English. She did;
and she explained the best she could about how things worked there; and she
assured me she would tell me when my plane would be leaving, as hers left after
mine, which ended up being delayed. So we had a nice chat while waiting; and
what had been a stressful situation was turned into a pleasant one.
I don't recall what we talked about, but apparently it had quite an impact on
her, influencing the topic of her master's thesis, and defining the topic of the
doctoral dissertation she is about to embark upon.
She has permitted me to post this edited version of our Skype dialogue. Times

What if a distributed energy technology were developed that removed the need for fuel or wires, harnessing energy from the wheelwork of nature that is inexhaustible and ubiquitous. In actuality, such devices are in development, so the possibility that this could indeed materialize is not only high, but the time-frame could be fairly soon. The devices are not free, but the "fuel" is, since nature provides it for free. And many of the developing technologies look like they could not only be ecological but economical -- more affordable than present technologies.
The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss what urban lighting might look like in such a scenario. No wires. No batteries. Just install a permanent light where you want the light.
Another side issue is that many years ago, before the dawn of "planned obsolescence", permanent filaments were developed. If we reintroduced those, then these light fixtures could run for decades with no service other than cleaning.

You think I could only research what urban lighting might look like in such a scenario... Not necessary for ME to CREATE something... like new technologies... 'cause

[8/20/2014 2:42:43 PM] Sterling: Your role would be to conceptualize what urban lighting would look like, how it would be deployed, what its costs might be, what its maintenance would entail, how it would be received by the population, how it would improve safety, how it could be motion-detector activated (the room I'm sleeping in presently has a motion detector dim light that turns on when there is motion in the room at night) in some situations. You might also want to have a section exploring the parable significance of "ye are a light to the world", how providing light effects people on a spiritual level; how evil is equated with darkness, and goodness is equated with light.

|[Masters Thesis] Abstract
This article presents the analysis of urban artificial lighting as a facilitator element in the reading and understanding of the construction and configuration process of cities. Through a multidisciplinary study on the cities, which has involved the construction of concepts such as Landscape, Perception, History, Communication, Lighting, Law and Urban Management, aims to recognize the artificial lighting as an aid in reading the nocturnal landscape of contemporary cities and provide subsidies for lighting design interventions that should be through Lighting Master Plans
(LMPs), proposed as a management tool to assist in the process of structuring landscapes of contemporary cities, to improve urban places-man relationship. There are three main functions of urban lighting: functional, security, and from the 1980s,
scenography. Thus, besides the already established functions performed by artificial lighting since the beginning of the Public Lighting (PL) in urban scale, the light is a revealing element of space, thanks to the scenic character who acquires from the final decades of the twentieth century. Currently, there are two most recurrent methodologies of urban lighting: the movement of French origin L'Urbanisme
Lumiθre, broader and inclusive, and the already global City Beautification, which corresponds to more timely interventions and disconnected from other variables such as their environment, culture and history. The performance of artificial lighting in urban design allows us to offer a variety of readings as revelations of the age of the city, giving your landscape the desired intonations. It appears that the design of artificial lighting can create conditions of comfort and visual compositions, reveal some urban sectors, enhance the appearance of objects and create the appropriate information intended to highlight the atmosphere.

2012. It features lighting that changes in color, intensity, fluctuating

Yes, one issue that would need to be address with such amazing
lighting would be the distraction it might be to the driver, taking
their attention away from the road and the vehicles, pedestrians,
animals, and obstacles around them. Drivers would have to be more
disciplined than they are now.
This certainly makes a case for Google's driverless vehicles, which
wouldn't be distracted by light art shows taking place, allowing the
passengers to enjoy that, while it navigates the vehicle safely down

"Planned Obsolescence" is when engineers purposely make products sub-standard so they break after x years so customers have to buy more.

You've heard the phrase "cities of light", which refer to refuges in the end times that will be protected from the corruption elsewhere on the planet. So in that context, "light pollution" is a misnomer, like saying "she is too happy." There is no such thing. Happy is good.
On the other hand, I can relate to the thrill of going to remote areas without light pollution, where you can see all the stars.
But on that latter point, when these FE technologies finally arrive, so also will space flight capabilities. We'll be able to go off planet and get our star shows up there.

Use your jetpack to fly to/from work. no more gridlock (but that is a topic outside of lighting).
Most will work from home, so flying will be for other
transpiration needs, including recreation. Imaging visiting the grand canyon in a jetpack, or flying through the arches in Moab, Utah.
We could have cities floating on the ocean.

Imagine these devices powering light fixtures, increasing and decreasing in intensity as noise and other vibrations increase/decrease. So they would naturally dim as the city goes to sleep, then brighten as it comes awake.
Every city light array should (not by law, but by recommendation) include a portion that shows the noise level through the light intensity.
