Smart Scarecrow show closes; opens new media opportunity

After five years of providing a weekly broadcast, Gary Hendershot has decided to take an extended break from his weekly energy interview show, though he will be continuing his Wide Awake News segment. Meanwhile, let's see if we can come up with a reasonable substitute.

Since May, 2011, nearly three years ago, I've been doing my "This Week in Free Energy™ " show with Gary Hendershot on his weekly Smart Scarecrow show, which it seems he had running for about a year prior to that. Prior to joining Gary, I had been doing the TWIFE series since September 2004 with James Jancik of Feet to the Fire, so I've been doing this for nearly a decade.

Last night, Gary sent me a message saying (slightly edited):

I am going to close down the SmartScarecrow Show for the time being. Tomorrow's show will be the last. I will announce just before your segment.

It's been a good run, but to be honest, the cost of producing the show has gotten out of control. That and I am so busy with my day job these days that I have not been able to spend the time needed to properly produce the show for a long time.

As such production quality is suffering. I don't even have time to work on scheduling guests. Would rather call it quits while many still have fond memories than hang on producing crappy shows and ruin the reputation for quality earned over the years.

G. Hendershot

In a follow-up email, he wrote:

[The] decision to put the show to bed is much more about time than money … my day job has picked up significantly over the past 6 months or so … I am now working at my day job nearly 60 hours a week and billing about 35 of those … I am way too old to be working this hard … am getting exhausted … can't keep up this pace anymore …

I make a very good living at my day job … enough to put me in top 20% of wage earners … enough that I am easily able to absorb the $7200 it cost last year to keep my equipment and software up to snuff for my broadcasting hobby …

The straw that broke the camel's back was desire to broadcast in HD … I had my finger on the button to purchase a new computer at about $8000 … then I thought about it and realized I do not have guests scheduled for the next few weeks and really do not have the energy to work on scheduling … cold bucket of reality … time to move on before it gets stale …

I might consider doing one shot "specials" from time to time when an opportunity comes up to produce some really exceptional content … but the weekly show just has to go …

G. Hendershot

I asked him if it would help if I did most of the work in lining up the weekly guests. He replied:

I don't think so … I really need to step away from it for a while …

And at 5:22 pm Mountain, he wrote (slightly edited):

Yes, I will continue to do the Wide Awake News segments on Mondays … I have been asked more than once to expand that one to 5 nights a week, but just can't do it …

As a participant in the weekly broadcast, you deserved an early heads up, but everything I have discussed with you will be public knowledge anyway … so no reason why anything should be considered confidential …

I have been considering this move for a while now, but decided it was time to pull the plug early this week … There are no men in black threatening me … I am not about to be foreclosed on … There is nothing ominous or conspiratorial about it … I just need to simplify my life a bit …

At 6:28 PM he wrote:

Burnout? … hmmm … yeah, could be interpreted that way by many; and I would understand if an objective observer came to that conclusion … From this end it just feels like exhaustion … the demands on my time are more than most can imagine …

First live broadcast was Feb of 2009 … went to a weekly schedule Oct of 2009 … started posting to YouTube December of 2010 …

At this point, there are 155 episodes of The SmartScarecrow Show posted to YouTube consisting of more than 300 hours of content … [The] typical broadcast runs a little less than 2 hours … If you sat down to watch all the recorded content and spent 8 hours per day 7 days a week watching, it would take you a month to see all the recorded content …

155 episodes.

As far as coming back goes, ask me in May … March and April are going to be so busy for me, I may not have time to go to the bathroom … between a couple major projects, marrying off my daughter, and all my other obligations, I suspect it will be May before I can even put my head up …

Gary, your intelligence, wit, intentional Southern drawl, and production talents will be missed. You do excellent work.

I'll continue to listen to your SmartScarecrow YouTube channel, and encourage others to do the same as you "bark at the moon" like you affectionately call it.

Last Show

Here's a recording of the "Final Episode".

New Opportunity

Rather than just see this venue/genre go away, I'd like to put out the call for those in our audience who have video skills to step forward and move this venue/genre forward.

I know you're out there, because I've heard from you over the years.

We've got some great content, and with some great delivery, we could expand our reach even beyond what we're already achieving.

What I envision is a show series that resembles the nightly news in the mainstream, but with a focus on exotic free energy with some fun thrown in. Ideally, it would have the following attributes:

I'd like to have a brainstorming session to explore possibilities about how we might proceed to make the Free Energy Quest finally blossom as we witness the emergence of exotic free energy into mainstream acceptance. Contact me if you would like to be in on this.

Eventually, we'd like to get to the point where most of the videos we produce get millions of hits. There's no reason we couldn't be doing that now. We have the content. We just need the magical delivery.
