Randell Mills explains upcoming Blacklight Power demo

The proposed 10 MW device that would be 1 ft2, would entail a 60-toothed gear spinning at 200 rpm, making the water chamber size a few micro liters, lasting a millisecond, during which two electrodes would create a supersonic-expanding plasma that goes into a magnetohydrodyamic converter, then directly into electricity, cleanly, safely...

Pure Energy Systems News

Last week, Blacklight Power issued a press release announcing that they have developed their technology to the point that in one square foot of space they can produce 10 MW -- enough to power 10,000 homes. And that the capital cost to build such a plant would be $10 per kW of output -- far cheaper than any power source presently available on the planet, and nearly inconceivable that anything could get any cheaper than that. They said they will be doing a demonstration of their technology on January 28.

I found out about this announcement while visiting Brillouin at their replication set-up at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) International, and videotaped Mike McKubre and them talking about the ramifications.

This morning I was fortunate to be able to interview Dr. Mills for thirty minutes. Unfortunately, due to a computer glitch, my Skype recorder wasn't turned on. But he graciously agreed to do another interview, which was shorter because he had a meeting he had to get to. And, because I had already asked my questions, he rolled through the information in quick manner, addressing pretty much all the same points in rapid-fire manner.

Here's the video (I added some images to accompany the audio):

My primary question was what they will be demonstrating on January 28. He clarified that it would not be the 10 MW system, which is presently in process of being built, and could be ready in a matter of weeks.

He describe both the discovery that makes this energy harvesting possible, as well as the mechanism that will make this possible using off-the-shelf technologies that aren't very complex. He said that they are licensing OEMs to build these systems.

He also emphasized that this technology will drive the move back to DC power, which is far more safe and efficient on the point-of-use level. "Pretty much everything in your home is DC driven, and has to be converted from AC. Why not just go to all DC?"

He has been able to raise $80 million dollars so far to support their research and development.

The Blacklight system is based on a new type of reaction, relying on classical physical laws. It treats electrons as real, solving the problem of what the electron is, and how to achieve a more stable form of the hydrogen atom. Randy said that no one put the effort in 80 years ago in solving what the electron is. By doing so you find out it predicts why it's stable; and how you can have more stable states of the H atom -- which is what "dark matter" is comprised of. So the products of their reaction are oxygen and the hydrino, which is a more stable form of the hydrogen, and doesn't react with anything. It is totally inert (dark matter).

The process uses water as the primary fuel, but uses only a tiny amount, as it goes into a plasma state then directly to electricity -- "ten million times more energy dense than fire." 1010 Watts per Liter of water. To put that in perspective, the entire U.S. grid is 600,000,000,000 watts, or 6 x 1011

While the reaction has a high power density, it doesn't have a possibility of running away. It is very safe.

He described the main components of the 10 MW system. The reaction area is comprised of the water fuel entering a volume that is triangular in shape between interdigitating gears. The volume is about 2 mm thick by 4 mm, and 1 cm wide (the thickness of the gears). That would be enough fuel to give you 10 kilo-Joules of energy. The 60-toothed gears rotate at 200 rpm, at about a millisecond time scale per reaction. So at a rate of 10 kJ per tooth, gives 10 MW of power continuously, at an efficiency of 90 percent conversion rate.

The water fuel, energized by two electrodes, creates a supersonic-expanding plasma, that goes into magnetohydrodynamic converter (a known science), which converts that plasma directly into electricity. "It's a technology that basically has been looking for an application, same as what we saw with the laser. Our application is perfect for it, with supersonic expanding plasma with 10 million times the power density of fire."

On the 28th, they will be describing this process and presenting the evidence they have accumulated so far to verify this phenomenon. This will include spectral analysis as well as data from high-speed cameras.

They will also demonstrate a powerful burst of energy, which makes a shock-wave that results in a loud sound. This will go into a heat measurement device, also known as a "bomb calorimeter" which measures the heat dissipated into the water. This data will be given, by which the power per unit volume can be calculated.

In the future, they plan to do live webcasting to show a wider audience their technology in operation. They'll be redoing their website,

The 10 MW device they are building is actually smaller than a square foot. It's just 9 inches on each side. They're buying a 10,000-amp commercial seam welder to apply to the prototype (where the water is turned to plasma-->electricity).

Scaling it up and down will actually essentially just entail speeding up or slowing down the rotation speed of the 60-toothed gears. Faster will give more power, slower will give less. I didn't ask him if this could be a mechanism for governing the output to respond to changes in the load demand. Obviously these adjustments would need to be within the limitations of the wiring. Also, to double the output, you could double the gear size.

On the much smaller size, Dr. Mills talked about using a "plasma dynamic converter" instead of the magnetohydrodynamic converter. The plasma dynamic converter is something Blacklight invented and published in IEEE. It involves taking a magnetized needle and putting it in a magnetic field, parallel...; get voltage between the needles, perpendicular needle...; very weak plasma with 50% conversion to electricity. {The "..." are from my incomplete notes from our first interview.}

He said the UL approval process should be very straightforward, since they have 12 analytical tests to show that it is very controllable, very repeatable, producing the same energy every time they run it. It involves low voltages, and combines numerous off-the-shelf components that are well known and understood.

While I would love it if Blacklight was successful in embodying their concept into a functional device that could power the world, and I would especially love it if a functional prototype could emerge in a few weeks (which Dr. Mills suggested in our first interview); I'm guessing that it will take longer than that to work through all the kinks. Could be 1-3 years or more.

That said, being an optimist, I'm going to go ahead and move them up the list in the Top 5, perhaps even ahead of Rossi who has already demonstrated a 1 MW system, which is available for sale, though people are not yet buying because the evidence isn't strong enough.

Heat Exchanger Math

After posting this story, I received the following assessment from one of our readers:

So, Randal says his MHD converter will be 90% conversion efficiency and can be built with off the shelf components. Hmm. Let do some quick calculations assuming he can get 90% conversion efficiency and will dissipate the power uniformly to all 6 faces of the 1ft^3 volume of the device. Not likely but lets give him the benefit of the doubt.

The 1MW of heat dissipation divided between 6 faces mean that 166.67KW/ft^2 must be dissipated by his 10MW in 1ft^3 device. ??

The best numbers I can find for transfer to water is copper at 455W/(m^2*K) K=C-273.17. That places the Delta temperature at 3670C. The only problem with that is that copper boils at 3200C and water goes super critical at 322C.

Ok, lets ignore the boiling copper and go to steam. Steam to copper is only 455W/(m^2*K) which means that temperature of the outside of the device must now be at over 100,000C or near the temperature of hot fusion. ;~( Things go down hill from here, but I look forward to seeing what he has. :~)
