Moller Skycar signs $480 million MOU

Moller International has announced signing a memorandum of understanding to create a US-based joint venture to produce numerous models of its vertical take-off and landing aircraft, with its first variety by 2014. But could craft powered by Morgado's MYT engine beat them?

When I was in Sใo Paulo recently, I saw a city that has a huge traffic problem, given that back when other cities were developing subway, light rail, and other rail systems, the local government was receiving bribes from the auto industry to keep those alternatives out of their city. Now they are paying a huge price for that corruption.

A few years ago, a French infrastructure engineering company came in to inspect the city for possible work-arounds, but finally concluded that there are none. While their economy is booming (unlike most other places in the world), their transportation infrastructure is stuck.

As motorcycles zoom perilously between nearly parked cars driving down the roads, with a couple of fatalities a day, I commented to my hosts, the Keppe Motor group, that the solution to their gridlock would be flying cars.

Now, it looks like we area getting closer to that becoming not just a wish but a reality.

On January 24, Moller International, Inc. issued a press release at announcing:

"Moller International, Inc. (MI) (OTC-QB:MLER), the developer of the Skycarฎand Neuera™ aircraft announced today that it has received a signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreeing to create a US-based Joint Venture (JV) with Athena Technologies Inc. of Harbor City, California.  The goal of the newly formed JV is to establish co-production for its aircraft in the US and the People's Republic of China.

"Under the provisions of the memorandum, MI will team with this US company-led JV to jointly produce numerous models of its vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft.  The JV will initially invest $80 million (USD) of a planned $480 million investment with the objective of producing a variety of VTOL aircraft by 2014.  Production will include the Skycarฎ 200 LS, Skycarฎ 400, Skycarฎ 600 and Neuera™ aircraft."

While this is great news, I can't help but think of my friend, Raphial Morgado, inventor of the MYT engine, and his "hobby" that we reported on back in 2009.

I wouldn't be surprised if Morgado doesn't beat Moller to the "last frontier of aviation: personal flight craft," on a fraction of Moller's budget.

He's making progress on the development of his 6-inch MYT engine, which would be a great driver for things like a jetpacks on the small end, and flying cars on the larger. 

This is possible because of the extreme light weight of the engine versus the amount of power it is able to produce on very little fuel. 

An Angle Flight Pack with a 100 mile range is not inconceivable -- in the very near future.

Furthermore, given its light weight (e.g. 50 lbs), you would not need a parking spot for your jetpack. You could carry it like a backpack into a building, and secure it there, like any of your other personal belongings you take with you.

And, I can't help but conclude, given the power of the 6" engine, that it would be capable of not only carrying one passenger, but a load as well -- or even a second passenger. The numbers in what was published by the recent Australian DOD analysis of the MYT engine's capabilities support that possibility.

Also, the safety and certification process for the jetpack wouldn't be nearly as ominous as for a flying car, which would have to pass FAA regulations. The Jetpack is smaller than an ultralight. Just zip above the trees, well out of the way of aircraft, to go from one place to another. Suddenly, a 2-hour commute in gridlock traffic becomes a 5-10 minute flight, direct from your home or apartment to your destination's front steps. (Of course, new regulations will need to be established for jetpack flying safety and order, so people don't fly into each other, but that shouldn't be too difficult.)

Furthermore, the MYT engine isn't the only edge Morgado has up his sleeve. A few years ago, he developed a new propeller design that will give him even more efficiency and boost. He has also developed a new technology that would make the flight materials lighter, stronger, and cheaper than what are presently used in aviation.

With all these advances, eventually, the scaled up engines could be applied to much larger applications, making runways unnecessary for even the largest craft. Even airports could become a thing of the past, inasmuch as you can take off and land pretty much anywhere.

This isn't science fiction or wishful thinking. It's just a matter of time before we see these things implemented. But we'll want to get rid of the corruption so that these things will be used for peaceful applications, not war. (Good riddance, TSA, when we finally realize the true terrorists are the ones in power in our nations, not the ones hiding in caves somewhere.)

Freedom of movement is one of the most valuable, empowering tools for mankind. We could be only months, not years, away from the beginnings of Jetson-like capabilities.

Just daydreaming here. Don't go bothering Morgado, he's busy finishing the MYT 6" engine.
