Looking for Comment Moderators

The volume of negativity has gotten out of hand in the comments, so I'm asking for volunteers to help moderate the comments. I don't mind honest skepticism stated respectfully, but crass negativity, rudeness, unfounded allegations, etc., will no longer be permitted.

Update (Feb. 25, 2012; 4:30 pm)
We've received sufficient volunteers to proceed on this. Thanks for all your support.

Pure Energy Systems News

I've been getting a lot of people telling me that I should get rid of the comment section at the bottom of our stories at PESN and pages at PESWiki and There is too much rudeness, too much mindlessness, too many knee-jerk skeptics, too many trolls.

In the past, I've enjoyed the good insights gained from many of the comments, and these have helped steer me and make course corrections. I've also enjoyed the humor.

However, recently, I've found that the level of negativity in the free-for-all is overwhelming, creating a net morale killer. It defeats the "hope" aspect that the emergence of free energy technologies can engender.

Hence, today, I removed the comments capability from PESN (at least for the most recent stories).

People read the great news, get motivated, then read the comments and get deflated.

How do you think the subject of the story feels -- the inventor or technology group that is the topic of the article? Would you want to be the recipient of such awful comments if I wrote an article about you?

I'm finding it harder and harder to not be effected by how terrible the general tone has become. It dampens my spirit after just a few minutes of glancing through the comments, looking for worthwhile input. It's not worth the $100/month it costs to have the comment feature.

Here I am sacrificing tremendously for the last decade in order to perform this news, directory, and networking service where others dare not tread, only to have some people end up treating me like an imbecile, fraudster, scammer, idiot, etc.  That is no fun. I appreciate the positives comments, and some of the constructive criticism, but the negative comments have become so abundant, ridiculous, and mean, that I prefer to not have to put up with that negativity any more.

I would imagine that the inventors who are the subject of these stories would say ditto to that. Some people have thin skins. But some inventors will not even allow me to cover their technology because of the negativity that occurs in the comments. Who knows who might be lurking with a great breakthrough technology but then doesn't come forward because they don't want to be subjected to the mass dog pile from the skeptics.

No more. I'm not going to have the unmoderated comments function any more. And I don't have time to do the moderating myself.

Call for Volunteer Moderators

However, I am willing to put the comment capability back up if I can get a few volunteers to moderate the comments (not after the fact, but before they appear).

Here is some of what your task would entail:

Not allowed

  • Flaming
  • Personal attacks
  • Groundless skepticism
  • Rude comments
  • Spam
  • Off-topic free energy stuff posted across multiple pages
  • Off-topic posts that do not contribute to the value of thread

  • Reasonable observations of a skeptical nature, that address points that are not covered in the article and which have not yet been addressed, stated without rudeness or personal allegations.
  • Elaboration of scientific principles, objectively stated.
  • Any personal attacks must be backed by documentation; otherwise, they will be considered slander and will not be allowed.

If there is a comment that has a mixture of good and bad content, you could repost it, minus the bad.

I would prefer if the moderators are willing to have their names and contact coordinates listed on our contact page, but I can understand if some of the moderators would prefer to be anonymous.

However, before I open up the comments again, I require that at least one of the moderators be listed on our contact page, as being in charge of the moderator function, so that people have a place to appeal who feel they have valid points to make, etc.

[Note: Even before posting this story, I've already had a volunteer for this role: I presume because of my comments last night in the Smart Scarecrow show.]

Technical Particulars

I'm using (aka Echo) infrastructure for the comments.

Here are some of the setting options:

Moderation Settings
Moderation modes
All submitted comments are posted and published immediately. Moderators can moderate later.
Submitted comments are not posted and will remain hidden until moderated.
Comments are not visible to other commenters until the author is approved by the moderator.
A user is considered "new" until his messages are approved at least 5 times AND more then 12 hours passed since the first post.
Existing comments are visible, but no new comments are accepted.
No existing comments are visible, and no new ones are accepted.
Auto-hide comments from banned users in moderation queue
Makes moderation nearly instant, but the changes will take a few moments to reflect in the respective comment rolls
Display in comment awaiting pre-moderation:
Managing inappropriate content
Allow users to report items, enables the "Flag" control
Remove item after
Number of unique IP users sufficient to bury an item
JS-Kit has integrated Akismet to its commenting system to automatically detect spam comments.
Put comments containing inappropriate language into moderation queue and highlight inappropriate words in the moderation queue.

When I resume the comment feature, the old comments will reappear. I would like to have the bad/offending comments deleted out.

NOTE: We are presently moderating all comments, to keep out the crass negativity, flaming, and other inappropriate forms of criticism. We welcome constructive criticism tactfully stated. Frequent offenders will be blacklisted.

ADVISORY: With any technology, you take a high risk to invest significant time or money unless (1) independent testing has thoroughly corroborated the technology, (2) the group involved has intellectual rights to the technology, and (3) the group has the ability to make a success of the endeavor.
All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident.
