REPORT: Tesla Days and Tesla Science Foundation Conference

Michael Riversong reports on the conference that took place in Philadelphia July 9-11, 2010.  Topics included Tesla coils, Zero Point Energy, Atmospheric Energy, Quantum Physics, Gyroscopics, Ball Lightning, Electrogravitics.

Many community members and scientists have been organizing ongoing events in Philadelphia recently. On July 9 - 11 2010 this resulted in a science conference along with several events for the general public. This is a summary of the conference by one of its volunteers.


Years ago, it looked like Philadelphia was a place to write off. Basically, a war zone. People made fun of the city, when it was mentioned at all. Then there was the awful MOVE! disaster in the 80s and that destroyed whatever might have been left of the city's good reputation. Many professional travelers arranged their lives so it was never necessary to set foot or paw there, and everything went along well.

Meanwhile, within the city new generations came of age, apparently oblivious to how the rest of the world thought about their city. They grew up among the grand traditions of Liberty and the Franklin Institute, and many of them turned out pretty well.

Now some of their children are building Tesla coils.

This is perhaps the first city in the world to have reached a critical mass of people able to hold a contest. Outside of the specialized fields of advanced energy research, electronic engineering, and general nerdiness few people know that Tesla coils are an art form with infinite potential. They can be built in all kinds of sizes and shapes, any color, many kinds of materials – simply a grand new field for human expression; a new form of art.

Tesla coils have a deeper significance. Some of that is mystical, such as the legend that Tesla himself was able to charge a "tertiary" coil on top of a special coil, and then keep it at the head of his bed to recharge himself any time he needed to late in his life. On a more practical level it is possible to do extensive research into wireless electricity and various kinds of materials with one. We've only touched the surface of what is possible so far.

Several generations gathered together from all walks of life and many parts of the area, including the much maligned depths of southern New Jersey, on Friday afternoon to set everything up. Among the first to arrive were members of several bands. All the setup took some time, partly because of intermittent and sometimes heavy rains that drenched the area. Eventually, around 5:30, it was possible to get some music going.

Generally the bands were pretty good. David Immendorfer was allegedly responsible for picking out the music, and with his extensive connections and tremendous personal energy he did a good job. A decent variety of contemporary genres were represented.

Of course the main excitement was the Tesla coil contest itself. The general ambiance of the park, along with great background music, made the contest feel perfectly balanced. Setting up these things can be extremely difficult, so multiply that by the 5 entries, and you will get a good impression as to the heroism of staff members and entrants. Everyone cooperated beautifully, and as you can see from the photos, it all worked well.


James Corum, Ken Corum, and James Hardesty usually provide a "tag team" approach in their presentations, which is how they worked at this conference. They go back all the way to the first International Tesla Society Conference in 1984.

James Corum

Gave a historical background for Tesla's work. Benjamin Franklin provided the first foundations of research into electricity. The well-known kite experiment was key in many ways. We have a tendency, especially outside Philadelphia, to think of Franklin mainly as a politician, but in his day he was more well known internationally as a scientist.

Mahlon Loomis brought forth awareness of a possible radio band, laying a foundation for understanding the full electromagnetic spectrum. He was well known for helping to document a massive solar event in 1859. "Loomis was the bridge from Franklin to Tesla."

Part of the demonstrations at the end of the talk included a remarkable magnetic signal detector. Long before any real radio apparatus had been developed, he had found a way to find signals such as lightning bursts by rotating magnets in circular patterns. Hardesty duplicated one of these, took out the normal crystal detector in an old radio, and let us spin the magnet around to get reception.

Philadelphia's Franklin Institute was a great place to visit when he was growing up – there were several exhibits of experiments in static electricity. That's the form of electricity discovered first.

Several French scientists also were experimenting. They found charges changing according to season & time of day, and discovered a whole electrical field of the Earth.

Milliken wrote a lot about Franklin's experiments in the 40s.

He spoke of Trichel Pulses: regular discharge of electrons between a pin & a plate. These were found in early copy machines & on HV transmission lines. They account for lines on paper produced by many older makes of copy machines. Attach a tank circuit, and you get a sine wave! Essentially becomes a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). Then, excite a distributed resonator, which is a Tesla Coil. There are many resonances.

He described how to make radio frequency reception vary with the height of a balloon. An extensive discussion of technical points of early radio and magnetic detectors followed.

Commented on how bright ideas can come about spontaneously, after long periods of trying many different things.

J. Corum

Many electrical phenomena involve oscillations similar to mechanical ones, like child's swings. Tesla discovered Parametric Regeneration, using capacitors to tune the resonance of circuits. From that Armstrong found a type of regeneration that was significant to the development of FM radio.

Marc Seifer

Marc gave an excellent explanation of the differences between outlooks of Einstein and Tesla. Much of it was based on material from his recent book, Transcending the Speed of Light: Quantum Physics & Consciousness.

Einstein implies that between and within atoms is empty space. In contrast, Tesla believed an older hypothesis that there is an ether filling all space in the universe. Overall, Tesla deserves a much more prominent place within the history of physics because his observations based on practical engineering are apparently much more accurate than those of the currently most recognized physicists.

Michael Treat

Atmospheric Electricity

History of electrostatics has been relegated to a sideshow. Working with it is very different from what we're doing now. Current levels of research are very low. Now we need to look at it again. We can regard it as "an alternative form of alternative energy."

We live in an electric field. Overall the gradient tends to be 100 volts per meter, measured vertically and increasing as you go up. You can't do anything with it until you have some electrons to push around. Electrostatic motors are possible. These can be powered by the atmosphere. Oleg Jefimenko (1922-2009) revived these about 30 years ago and wrote a book Electrostatic Motors, Their Design and Construction which should soon be reprinted by Tom Valone.

Instead of an antenna, you have an emitter. It's planted in the Earth, and electrons are pulled out through the tip of the wire. They want to go somewhere. There are particles in the ionosphere that are constantly raining down on Earth, and increasing positive ions near the tip of an emitter can increase the flow rate. One way is to use polonium or radium, which is of course dangerous. M.L. Breuer has done some comprehensive measurements and is thus a good reference.

Materials research has added to this field. We can use nanotechnology to get millions of emitter tips in a small area. Means of harnessing this electricity can be expensive right now, but may potentially work out for many applications that typically use low power levels.

Tom Valone

Casimir forces, nanotechnology, and other current lines of research were summarized. Zero Point Energy is an increasingly important term. There is some sort of energy in what we think of as empty space – a "false vacuum". So-called empty space actually contains more energy per unit of volume than a nuclear reactor.

The Quantum Vacuum by Peter Milonni was especially recommended. Hal Puthoff showed that the quantum vacuum provides the separation between electrons and the nucleus; while electrostatic attraction keeps them in a state of attraction. Reference was made to the work of Franklin Mead, a scientist working for the US Air Force Research Laboratory.

An electrokinetic equation can help understand these phenomena, and was more fully explained in Tom's book Electrogravitics 2. Force = (inertial mass) * acceleration. Best explanation of inertial mass is Mach's Principle – a reference frame is necessary to knowing what effect your actions have. The local quantum vacuum matrix could be a suitable reference frame. Toroidal shapes are conducive to superluminal travel.

The Casimir Engine by Pinto has been proposed, and should work. Haisch has a similar proposal, involving 1 billion tunnels 100 nm diameter in a 10 cc block. In these types of engines, energy can be harvested globally & used locally.

Ken shoulders worked with Hal Puthoff. He has circumvented his inventions getting classified by publishing them and having copies sent to Europe. It is possible we could set up nuclear batteries that last 25 years by using a liquid semiconductor to capture decay charges.


On Saturday night we had a banquet at a historic meeting house in the core of old Philadelphia. Many speakers had things to share, some political, and some more scientific. David Vuich from the Washington DC area did an excellent job as Master of Ceremonies.

Mark Passio succinctly stated the reasons why we need to research Tesla's work without hesitation or compromise. Many of the virtues of this type of technology are parallel to those promoted by the founding fathers of our country as they met in Philadelphia so long ago.

A standout among the speakers was Jane Alcorn, who presented the latest information regarding attempts to recover Tesla's Wardenclyffe lab, still standing on Long Island, and covert it into an educational center. Of course we were all rooting for her.

Dr. Ljubo Vujovic added a beautiful Old World touch, as he always does, with a further demonstration of his persistence and dedication to making sure Tesla is remembered by citizens of his homeland in Serbia and his adopted home in the United States. The Tesla Memorial Society of New York has become a comforting stable presence over many years.

After the banquet everyone was treated to a delightful full concert by the Divine Hand Ensemble. This group includes 2 harps, 3 violins, a cello, xylophone, guitar, and a Theramin. As this world's first electronic instrument the Theramin is only beginning to be explored. It is unique among instruments in that no touch is involved – every sound is created by the proximity of hands to antennas. Several different styles of music were presented, including classical pieces, adaptations of popular songs, and even a demonstration of playing two songs at once! This is surely music to go with a technological revolution.


Fran McCabe

Gravity was a persistent theme throughout the conference, and in this presentation Fran, an accomplished engineer, went into various aspects of gyroscopics, including how orbits affect each other. To a great extent gyroscopics involves harnessing natural gravitic inertia for useful purposes such as missile guidance and aircraft stabilization. There are several basic motions that we need to consider at all times when examining how gravity is working dynamically. Powered precession generally takes in a helical form which is evident throughout the universe. Really all motions are helical, when we consider the overall context of planetary, solar system, and galactic motion.

We often intuit results and then make mathematics to fit. Practical results are what matter. Fran showed us several unique and fascinating videos of gyroscopic experiments.

Jim Jenkins & Brian Yetzer

Much of their presentation involved discussions with audience members regarding the usefulness of three-dimensional representations in physics. These can be valuable in creating visualizations to enhance understanding of difficult concepts.

Gary Peterson

One Tesla coil sent electricity, and a near-duplicate received electricity across a table. There are 2 tuned circuits on each side, meaning 4 circuits total. This is a proof-of-concept showing how electricity can be transmitted anywhere using principles of resonance. The more load placed on a receiver, the higher the frequency of transmission. It operated at about 415 Khz. However this is not exactly like radio waves as we know them. Wavelengths for this frequency range are generally stated in terms of a mile or less.

We should keep in mind that the original system was designed to be global in nature, so this type of demonstration is simply a replica. Gary provided a number of historical notes as well, which gave the proper context for his research.

Sraddhalu Ranade

He found us on the Internet, discovered that our conference happened to coincide with a necessary trip to the USA, and became part of our group. We were delighted to hear what he had to say even though he was scheduled at the last minute. First, he provided some insights into the relationship between Tesla and Swami Vivekanada from India's point of view.

This led to many aspects of how physics is viewed in the ancient Vedas and the more recent teachings of Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950). Ether is regarded as a basis of matter, which is another line of thought contradicting much of modern physics.

Empty space has an impedance of 377 ohms. Permittivity and permeability are measurable. Therefore, there really is no such thing as empty space. All methods of power generation involve changes in ether. It can be characterized as "springy". Changes in ether can manifest as influences on electric fields, magnetic fields, light speed, and gravitation.

Variations in light speed have been found. Michelson, who did what's been considered the key experiment that proved ether didn't exist, later did other lesser known experiments contradicting the earlier conclusion. Modern evidence includes data from satellites, laser gyros, and background radiation.

Other implications of ether include explanations for red and blue shifts that contradict the idea of an expanding universe, possibility of traveling faster than light, and how space and time can appear to change. We can re-interpret General Relativity effects and Quantum Mechanics. Harold Aspden and Milo Wolff were cited as having made good contributions to this work.

Richard Leshuk

Ball lightning has not been acknowledged by many, but both Tesla and Charles Fort (1874-1932) knew a lot about it. They were contemporaries. Fort wrote four books which were simply collected accounts of anomalous events. These books have always been in print ever since.

Tesla explained that the interference of two arcs trapping a bit of air or vapor would create ball lightning. Some of his experiments seemed to duplicate the phenomenon, and James Corum has repeated those. Several members of the audience shared their observations of ball lightning.

Russell Anderson

Electricity and gravity are somehow related, as Einstein among many others had observed from the 1920s on. Many other researchers, including T. Townsend Brown and Tom Valone, have made significant contributions to electrogravitics. Recently Russell has formed a close association with John Searle.

Gravity control and propulsion can be drawn directly from the zero point. This is a form of fuelless propulsion. Two waveforms at right angles can create the effect. 64 struts & flight cells were built. 41 unmanned craft were built between the late 40s and 80s. Starship Ezekiel was one of the better documented efforts.

All of this is run from a law of squares, where random numbers put into squares will generate consistent identical sums of the diagonal numbers. This determines the relative quantities of material used in rotating rings. The process is often referred to as "magic squares".

So far the story of gravity control is mostly the story of Searle. Hopefully with the next developments we will see some real progress as several teams are attempting to recover his technology. Significant updates were presented at the ExtraOrdinary Technology Conference July 29 – August 2 when Mr. Anderson cooperatively demonstrated and lectured with Searle.
