Last night I was fortunate to be able to be the first to interview Raphial RG Morgado, famous inventor of the Massive Yet Tiny (or MYT) Engine, after nearly two years of silence. (Download mp3, 12 Mb)

The big news that we were able to break on that show was that they are now ready to go into production, being up and running as soon as possibly six to twelve months from now.   Because the engine has so few moving parts and its design is so simple, it wouldn't take nearly as long to get into production as typical engines.

We're talking an engine that is so compact it could replace an SUV's engine with something nearly as small and light as the alternator, but would have more power, all while making the mileage comparable to a Prius.  

Totally stunning stuff.

Rather than wait for a huge contract to build new vehicles from the ground up, Morgado's company, Angel Labs LLC, finally decided to just forge ahead with a retrofit paradigm.  They are looking for someone with $10 million to head up the franchising of retrofit garages that would replace existing engines with their engine.  Morgado would handle the production -- something he's done before, with some 150 inventions to his name.  The $10 million is needed for building the production plant.

Morgado anticipates that before long, this network of production and franchises could employ 2-3 million employees -- as many as have been left unemployed in the recent months of economic downturn -- all while helping people save money on fuel, as well as increasing the performance of their vehicles.  The resulting reduction of fuel consumption could soon be enough to remove our dependence on oil from not-so-friendly nations.  One of his biggest customers standing in line is the U.S. Military, who wants an exclusive on production until they are fitted, but Morgado wants the technology to also be available to the public. 

The MYT engine is a super compact yet powerful internal combustion engine that has captured the imagination of thousands from around the world.  Morgado said that someone from the U.S. Patent office told him that his MYT patent was the most downloaded patent in the USPTO history.  It features multiple firings in one cycle to give 40 times higher power to weight ratio, fewer parts, low maintenance, high mechanical efficiency and low pollution.

Though diesel or biodiesel is the fuel of choice for this engine because of its compression ignition design, the engine could also (with appropriate modifications) run on most any other fuel as well, including hydrogen, natural gas, ethanol, or gasoline.  An advantage of burning diesel in the engine is that it provides its own lubrication, so no engine oil would need to be used.  Also, the present infrastructure is already set up for diesel distribution.

The newer engine design recently completed is even better: smaller, more efficient and fewer parts.  A patent filing is pending on that one.

Even though the overall engine size is tiny in comparison, the astonishing part is that the rotating cylinder displacement is essentially the same as the piston cylinder displacement of the engine it replaces.  Morgado says that his engine uses essentially the same technology as the typical internal combustion engine, but he just combines it in a different way, and in so doing is able to get rid of quite a few things, including the valves, camshaft, cylinder heads and radiator system.

In April of 2006, Morgado and his company, Angel Labs LLC, received First-Prize in the "Create the Future" Design Contest by Emhart-NASA Tech Briefs.

The panel of judges included experts from some of the most advanced research groups and technology companies in history.  The winners were announced ... in New York City.  The first prize winner was Raphial Morgado and team members of Angel Labs LLC." Angel Labs featured the motor at the SEMA Show in Nov. of 2005, and then the LA Auto Show in Jan. of 2006, where thousands of people saw it in operation.  Many feature pages, stories and videos have been posted on the web about this technology.

Raphial Morgado provides an in-depth overview of the engine during the Los Angeles Auto-Show, where he described the goals behind the $4 million dollar R&D project, his personal interest in emerging engine technologies, and the remarkable features of the MYT engine technology. (YouTube; )

One of the skeptical comments I've encountered regarding this technology is that the prototypes have mainly only been run on compressed air, not actual fuel.  Morgado set the record straight last night on that one.  The prototype he ran in the shows ran by compressed air, but earlier versions were run on fuel for at least six months before they integrated the compressed air for safety and ease in indoor demonstrations.

It turns out that the design is not just suitable for replacing engines, but it is also ideal for a number of other fields of use, including as mentioned, pneumatic engines, for which it is ideal.  It is also ideal for other systems, such as geothermal, hydro, and steam.  Morgado says that it is the only engine in the world that can handle all three fluid/gas components well at the same time: volume, flow, and pressure.  Other systems can handle one or two of these at the same time, but not all three.  So not only can this engine revolutionize the engine industry, but it could also revolutionize the turbine industry.  No wonder Morgado says it will bring about the "next Industrial Revolution!"

The thought hit me about how small this engine could be and still power a generator that could keep batteries charged for electric/hybrid applications and with great economy.
