Possible Rosch KPP power source: Bob Neal-like self-sustaining air compressor

Aaron Willis puts forth an explanation of how the Rosch buoyancy set-up might be working -- not in the buoyancy, but in the air compressor, possibly utilizing some exotic free energy mechanisms to create the pressurized air that is used to fill the floats.


On August 3, Aaron Willis resigned from PES Network, not being comfortable with PES' very positive endorsement of the KPP technology. It has been his view that PES should be neutral on all technologies, and not get involved financially with them. He still remains supportive of the quest for exotic free energy technologies. 
The KPP is a buoyancy technology involving floats that fill with air at the bottom of a water tank to cause them to rise, turning a generator in the process, such that the system self-loops while also producing excess energy for base load power production.

I want to clearly state up front that I am not endorsing the Rosch KPP (Kinetic Power Plant). While I have some serious doubts about their setup, as I have analyzed it remotely, to the best of my ability, I find the idea quite intriguing and I am not ready to call them frauds. Time will clearly make that known. 

I have applied considerable amounts of rational thought and some bench testing to Rosch’s claims. I do not believe at this time that it can work as they have it configured, but I do find a modicum of merit in their idea. I have written several articles addressing my different thoughts on the idea. 

This first article addresses the fundamental working principle. From my tests, the paternoster floats will turn and cycle so long as a sufficient volume of compressed air is available. My test failed by orders of magnitude in replicating Rosch’s power claims using some off the shelf parts, but it did demonstrate that the floats will cycle with an adequate supply of air. We can argue about sagging chains, gear strength, hidden wires, mysterious 3rd forces and motor generators later. 

Let's take a trip to the swimming pool. 

Claiming to push a beach ball under water and then generating enough power to do it again by harvesting energy as the beach ball rises back to the top is totally asinine. This is what the skeptics are rightly pointing out. B-b-b-but you say, Rosch is not pushing a beach ball down at all, they are just letting one float up. Well... on first blush. yes, but in truth they are pushing a beach ball back down; its just a little more tricky to catch them doing it. See it is no problem to get the ball back down. Getting the air in the ball back down mathematically requires the same amount of energy that is produced from letting the ball float back up. Dragging the ball to the bottom of the pool is same thing as compressing the air in an air compressor and maybe even more efficient. It is game over.

If you are a fraud, you can use some sleight of hand to make it look like the game is still going. Simply fill an air tank with pre-compressed air. Deflate your ball, let it sink, fill it back up. With a large enough air tank, you could keep the magic show going for hours. {{For this statement, you need to put numbers to it. E.g. given the size of tank they are using, how long could they keep the system running, using that as a "battery"?}}

So why am I not ready to call Rosch frauds? 

There may be a clever trick to compressing air more efficiently than what we think we are seeing on the surface of the Rosch setup. If you buy into the theory that compressing air is a solar energy concentrating activity (See Appendix below) that is primarily responsible for the rise in gas temperature in addition to conserving the work of compression in the compressed gas itself, then there is a significant additional energy source that is brought into play. I don’t know of anything that can take advantage of this and Rosch’s external compressor setup has every appearance of dissipating heat instead of capturing and using it, but…

Sterling reported that Rosch told him there was something going on the inside of the air tank that resulted in pulsing. That sounds a lot like the Bob Neal equalizer tank. While that, in and of itself, is of dubious authenticity, it opens up the possibility of an endless supply of compressed air from a tank that would refill itself. Of course, if they have this type of tank, there is no need for a water column at all, but it is what it is. 

The idea of the Bob Neal equalizer tank is that ambient pressure air is somehow added into a high pressure chamber without undergoing the energy intensive work of compression. On the surface that sounds impossible, and I make no claim to understanding how the Neal equalizer tank might work, if it ever did. 

I’ve come up with my own idea of how ambient pressure air can be inserted into a high pressure tank using a pulsed jet of air through a Tesla type valve (1 | 2 | 3 | 4). If it is possible, then it is not too far of a jump to figure out how to make the tank fill itself. It essentially is an atmospheric heat engine with ambient heat as the fuel and compressed air as the output. 

Here is how I think ambient air could be compressed for a significant discount, taking full advantage of the solar heat that is concentrated in the compressed air. The low pressure chambers of the Tesla valve are the magic here. If that doesn’t work, my whole idea falls apart. Ambient solar heat is the fuel here. Instead of trying to get rid of it, we trap as much as possible. Tank needs to be insulated to prevent any heat escaping. Tank must be pre filled to get it started.

1. Ambient pressure air only enters the tank via the low pressure blower.
2. Electronic circuitry pulses the check valves as a high speed air jet rushes past them. Ambient air is vacuumed or blown into the low pressure zones in the Tesla valve created by the high speed air jet and is automatically compressed by the internal pressure.
3. An internal jet compressor mounted inside the tank increases the pressure in the tank. All heat of compression (solar heat) is captured inside the tank and increases internal air pressure.
4. High pressure air is exhausted out of the tank through a pneumatic motor. High to moderate psi air is still left to do work (fill floats).

If Rosch has anything like this going on inside their air tank, I’m going to keep an open mind. Consider that they only need relatively low PSI, several atmospheres, to keep the floats rising. But again, if they have something like this, there is no need for the floats. 

In my mind, they absolutely must have something like this inside the air tank, or the whole setup and configuration is impossible.

Appendix: Compressing Air is a Solar Energy Concentrating Activity

Compressing air is harvesting solar energy with incredible efficiency. But we just throw it away.

It is commonly thought and taught that browning motion, molecular friction and friction heat from compression are responsible for the temperature rise that occurs when a gas is compressed. The gas law formulas work almost perfectly to model the temperature and pressure changes, but they do not explain them. 

Here is a thought experiment. If there were no temperature rise, where would the energy of compression be conserved?
Nobody believes that the heat produced by a magnifying glass happens because the glass itself makes more heat. The heat energy is already in the light before it ever passes through the lens. The glass is just the tool that concentrates or compresses the light into a smaller area and its existing energy is expressed as a sharp temperature rise as it is focused in a small area. In a way, an air compressor is acting somewhat like a magnifying glass. 

A volume of ambient air has a corresponding quantity of heat. This is heat absorbed from the sun or surrounding environment. When the volume of air is compressed, the same quantity of heat already in the air must then exist in a smaller area and is expressed as a sharp increase in temperature as it is “focused” in a smaller space. 

If the compressed air is expanded before its heat is dissipated, it experiences very little temperature drop. But if the heat is dissipated and then the air is expanded it has the capacity to absorb more heat from the surrounding environment, since its original heat was lost. This is expressed as something we call cold. Cold air is to ambient heat what a dry sponge is to water. Compress a soaked sponge and water leaks out. Compress ambient (soaked) air and heat leaks out. Not a perfect comparison, but you get the idea. The compressed heat in the air leaks into the compressor components and the system must somehow get rid of that substantial heat or the compressor quickly burns up. 

But if we remove the “heat of compression” can the remaining ambient temperature, compressed air still do work? Every pneumatic tool I’ve ever used says, Yes. In fact, when losses of the work performed are counted, that room temperature, compressed air did an exact equal amount of work to that which it took to compress it – AFTER the heat above ambient temperature was removed. The math clearly shows that the energy of compression is conserved in the compressed air (air spring) very little in the heat. The vast majority of the “heat of compression” is a gift from mother nature. It is concentrated, densified solar energy that was in the air before it was ever compressed. In a perfect world, the work of compressing air plus the “free” heat energy provided by nature gives a COP > 1. Unfortunately we do not live in a perfect world and our best air compressors absolutely suck and this wonderful phenomenon has yet to be successfully exploited as far as I know.
