World-class nanotechnology chemistry professor and Jew, James Tour, testifies of Jesus Christ at Texas A&M Veritas Forum

Projects the team he leads do include: Nano-cars: four wheels, fully-rotating axles, motors; Plastic film supercapacitors for electric vehicle acceleration; Graphene nanotube batteries for 3-second cell phone charging; Graphene oxide process for removing radioactive elements from water.

My brother, Nathan, sent me a link this evening to this amazing lecture (embedded below) where a world-class scientist unabashedly testifies of the role Jesus Christ has played in his professional and private life through the years.

It was given at Texas A&M University's Veritas Forum whose purpose is: "Engaging students and faculty in discussions about life's hardest questions and the relevance of Jesus Christ to all of life."

James Tour has over 550 research publications and over 75 patents, and was named among “The 50 Most Influential Scientists in the World Today” by in 2014. He attended Syracuse, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Stanford. He gave what was described by a Nobel Laureate as "the best lecture I've ever attended" at Purdue.

In the opening of the Veritas Forum lecture, he said that his purpose was to "Show how my relationship with Jesus Christ has influenced my career."

In the first 15 minutes of the lecture, he talked about some of the highlights of what his research team (presently over 35 individuals) at Rice University has accomplished.

  • Space Composites - resin between space shuttle tiles using carbon nanotubes
  • Laser-induced graphene, taking inexpensive commercial plastic films, hit them with lasers, turns it into graphene
  • Carbon nanotubes, intercolate compounds that cause it to split, make graphene nanoribbon, creates transparent heating elements that could be used for de-icing on windshields, still transparent to RF (so you can use cell phone).
  • Capture CO2 from natural gas wells and make porous carbon materials from it. Over 3000 M2/g.
  • Make plastic film supercapacitors to go with electric vehicles to enable fast acceleration.
  • Use quantum dots, shine light, and emit light at a different frequency without photobleaching (degrading). Make things look very bright. Carbon quantum dots are non-toxic, but they cost 1 million dollars per kg. "We've found a way to make these in one step using nitrogen sulfuric acid from coal, which is less than $100/ton."
  • Graphene nanotube hybrids to be used in electrodes of cell phone batteries. 25 M2/gram surface area allows for very fast charging, e.g. 3 seconds.
  • Graphene oxide process for removing radioactive elements from water. Licensed by Merck.
  • Transparent memory for computer that's flexible.
  • Nano-medicine: 1) traumatic brain injury and stroke, and 2) drug delivery for targeting cancers
  • Nano-cars; four wheels, fully-rotating axles, motors. Shine a light on the motor and it rotates uni-directionally. You can fit 30k of these across diameter of human hair. Build a billion billion at a time. Eventually, we'd like to see if we can use it for construction, much like enzymes. In 100-200 years from now, we could build buildings, bringing in raw materials, use programmed assemblies to control massive number, to do construction from the bottom up.

He then showed a photo of his research team:

I wanted to write all this up, so that the non-spiritual scientists among you might be impressed with his accomplishments as a scientist and hopefully watch his very inspiring presentation.

He doesn't just talk about how God guides him in his scientific work, but he also talked about how it has effected his personal life, enabling him to find time with his family while still working hard in the career that he absolutely loves.

I hope you enjoy it at least a fraction as much as I did. I can very much relate to Dr. Tour because of my academic background in the biological sciences and physiology; as well as because of my Dad, who is a world-renowned atomic clock physicist, who his colleagues affectionately refer to as the "praying physicist." My dad has always given God the credit for his success. He just returned yesterday from another trip to Russia, where he was able to bear strong witness of God in a scientific conference setting. They loved it. He was the main celebrity at the international conference.

The only point in Dr. Tour's presentation that I would take strong issue with is the very last thing he said about the creation of humans being almost like a footnote in the work of God. I believe that humans are made in the image of God and have the destiny to become as God, if they but work hand in hand with God -- as Dr. Tour has done in his life. I'm guessing he would appreciate and agree with my correction.

I sent an email asking Dr. Tour if there is a recording somewhere of the lecture he gave at Purdue. Here is his response:

Subject: RE: Perdue lecture online? ...

Dear Mr. Allan, the Purdue lecture was in 1993, long before things were recorded, digitized and posted. It was unrecorded. The slides were actual slides on a projector, small transparent squares of polymer film. I have not the precise record of them anymore.

Thank you.

God bless,
