OK Go launches new music genre: Autio Power
Totally off-subject. But we gotta have fun sometimes, right?

OK Go hits one note at a time from each piano,
properly spaced, as they drive down the road playing their song. |

Yes, this is off topic from energy, but certainly of interest to the engineer in
us, as well as our appreciation for geek power and musical excellence, all
combined in one.
Have you ever driven down the road and veered to the middle or edge of the road,
hitting those punctuated indentations in the pavement that vibrate through your
tire to tell you you've gone too far to the left or right; and wondered if they
could engineer the spacing of these bumps to actually play a song, like a record
player? I would imagine that most of you have.
Well, now a singing group, OK Go has taken that to the next level, or several
levels beyond. Check this video
out:
You gotta love it.
They did this with Chevy's sponsorship for a Super Bowl (whatever that is)
commercial. I found out about it because I'm subscribed to their channel.
Note that the instruments are made to be in sync, even as the Chevy Sonic is
accelerating.
I wonder how long it took them to rig this. I would imagine at least several
months. I can't wait to
see the "making-of" video.
Imagine how hard it would be to keep those instruments tuned out there in the
desert where you get extremes of hot and cold.
Did they elevate the pianos so a stationary arm from the car hit the right note,
or did they engineer the arm to move up and down? I would guess the latter,
since the pianos look to be lined up evenly.
Of course they're not sending a good message about efficiency here, as this is
the height of wastefulness; but I would imagine that the instruments they lined
up for this were near they end of their life anyway, so this could be considered
a case of repurposing.
Here's the comment that I posted to the video:
Top 5 All-Time Favorite [Music] Videos for me. I think at least two of their others are also in my top 5. OK GO is awesome.
Being in that band would be a dream come true (if I wasn't busy saving the world with helping free energy emerge).
How are they going to top this one? |
Here are some of my other favorites from them:
Dogs
That one took like 107 takes before they got it right. And they did it
all in one take, no editing.
