E-Cat Weekly -- January 19, 2012

    Momentous Breakthroughs Announced During Anniversary E-Cat Interview - In a landmark interview, Andrea Rossi, the inventor of the E-Cat (cold fusion energy catalyzer), announced many breakthroughs in the development of his technology, answered a wide range of questions, and shared many details regarding the upcoming ten kilowatt heat unit for home use. (PESN and BeforeItsNews; January 15, 2012)
    • Is Rossi Looking at Mass Production for the E-Cat? - The customary view is the UL accepts products destined for sale in the final form, which is a fact.  However, the UL also offers governmental units assistance in establishing reasoned law, regulation and rules.  For manufacturers the UL also extends more than just final product tests, they work with manufacturers at the design stage to assure that a final product will in fact achieve an UL label.  It's a highly likely prospect that the design stage is where the UL and Mr. Rossi have started the process.  A quick review of the UL policy suggests that the E-Cat is substantially interesting enough to begin the UL Process and that Low Energy Nuclear Reactions are a new field.   • The Peak Oil Crisis: Cold Fusion Update - while it seems likely that LENR reactions are a real phenomenon, it has yet to be proven that commercial products which can start replacing fossil fuels are only months away.   • Rossi: First E-Cats Will Now Cost $50 per kW - Andrea Rossi is full of surprises. He recently announced that he would never be undersold by his competitors and said that a domestic E-Cat delivering 10-20 kW of power would cost between $1000-1500 USD. Today he has slashed that price by up to two thirds.   • Rossi Changes Plan Regarding Refueling of E-Cats - In an interesting and somewhat surprising move, Andrea Rossi now says that the home-based E-Cats he is planning to launch can be refueled by the customer. Rossi was asked by a reader of his blog how often and by whom the E-Cats would be recharged. Rossi replied: " 1- Yes, every 6 months the domestic E-Cat will have to be refilled. 2- the refilling operation will be made by the Customer himself or by his usual plumber, or installer.   • 1MW eCat Now $1.5M (US) - According to eCat.com, Andrea Rossi' primary customer-facing affiliate site, the 1MW eCats have now dropped from $2M to $1.5M. (ECatNews; January 14, 2012)

  • Instant Hot Water eCat - A few days ago, during an interview with Sterling Allan of Peswiki, Andrea Rossi told us that the $500 home eCat was not suitable for sanitary use (hand washing, shower etc). A relatively slow starter, instant-on hot water was beyond its ken. A blinking eye later, it appears that this problem has been solved (ECatNews; January 18, 2012)

Most current consumer electric space heaters are limited to 1,500 watts, which is claimed to be enough to heat 1,000 square.     NASA Calls Cold Fusion (LENR) a Game Changer - NASA's Technology Gateway has posted a two-minute video that summarizes the emerging LENR field and the hope it brings for a world of clean, affordable energy. The overview features senior research scientist at NASA Langley, Joseph Zawodny describing a near future of home power devices.     • Zawodny Clarifies NASA Video - "As for what people are trying to read into this video, specifically my use of the word "demonstrated", it is my professional opinion that the production of excess energy has been demonstrated when the results of the last 20+ years of experimentation are evaluated. [snip]… I did not say, reliable, useful, commercially viable, or controllable. If any of those other terms were applicable I would have used them instead."

      Is NASA's LENR endorsement merely a spin cycle to attempt to clean their hands of past suppression? - Hank Mills sees the recent NASA video endorsing LENR as a spin attempt, pushing the Widom Larsen theory, which takes the "fusion" out of cold fusion; as a way to diminish the blowback on the political and scientific establishment who have been denigrating cold fusion for two decades. What will people think when they realize cold fusion is legitimate after all, and we could have had it 20+ years ago? (PESN and BeforeItsNews; January 13, 2012)
  • Oz skeptic offers prize if Rossi's E-cat works - Mullumbimby is close to the centre of Australia's "alternative lifestyle" culture, with the same associations that Stonehenge may invoke in England, or the Bay of Fundy in Canada. In the case of the E-cat, a local retiree is reportedly looking to convince investors to toss dollars in Rossi's direction. (The Register; UK; January 12, 2012)

    • Mullumbimby, helping to save world - Entrepreneur Dick Smith will be paying $200,000 award if E-Cat works. All going well, the world's energy crisis may be solved in the auditorium of the Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club tonight. If Mr Bryce, who as a member of the Australian Skeptics has experience testing the scientific veracity of all sorts of weird and wacky things, gives the technology the thumbs-up, Dick Smith will give the group $200,000.     • Australian Entrepreneur to Give $200k to Charity if Rossi's E-Cat Proven - Dick Smith, an Australian entrepreneur and member of the Australian Skeptics group has promised to give $200,000 to the Byron New Energy Charitable Trust if he can be convinced that the E-Cat is a valid technology.     • More fizzer than fusion, so Dick's not energised - They had their wires crossed, their timing out of sync. Each was expecting the other to call. Mr Smith said: ''I said, get me some evidence and I will put some funding up, but they couldn't even organise the timing for a Skype link-up. I am very suspicious of the whole thing. The poster that lured the good folk of Mullumbimby said: "Hello clean, green, renewable, inexpensive cold fusion. You are invited to a public meeting." There was to be a Skype link-up to Italy with the physicist Andrea Rossi, who would explain how his E-cat machine could take a small amount of energy and turn it into lots of energy.       Lure of cold fusion backfires - A NSW north coast entrepreneur who claims to be in negotiations to buy the local rights to "perpetual motion" technology has threatened to sue businessman Dick Smith for $100 million over a soured investment proposal. "If you believe there is evidence of this work then $200,000 is not fair because it would be worth $2 trillion if you could develop this type of perpetual motion machine," (The Australian; January 18, 2012)
    • Dick Smith warns against investment in 'cold fusion' technology - Entrepreneur Dick Smith has said he is "extremely concerned" for any potential investors in technology claiming to have achieved "cold fusion", a process that could solve the world's energy problems by producing almost limitless power.  (The Australian; January 19, 2012)

  • The E-Cat and the Environment: Would it be Environmentalists' Dream Technology? - When Andrea Rossi talks about his E-Cat technology he often emphasizes the following: It produces no emissions of any kind — no smoke, particulates, or carbon. It uses no radioactive materials. It leaves no radioactive waste. In other words, in addition to producing vast quantities of energy cheaply, the E-Cat is a clean technology and it could go a long way to mitigating the threat of pollution and global warming/climate change.     • Rossi Admits NASA is a Competitor, Predicts Victory Like David vs. Goliath - Andrea Rossi has made some comments regarding the revelation that NASA is involved in LENR research. Rossi was asked on his JONP site to comment on the video that NASA released discussing its LENR work. He responded: The fact that NASA is trying to copy my work honours me. But their theory is wrong. We will beat them, as well as all the other Competitors with our E-Cats: the E-Cats will have a too low price to allow NASA or anybody else to compete (E-CatWorld; January 13, 2012)
    • NASA has Applied for a LENR Patent - The National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA the US government's space agency has apparently filed a patent application for a low energy nuclear reaction (LENR) energy source. Joe Zawodny a Senior Research Scientist at the agency's Langley Research Center made that revelation in a blog entry dated January 14. (EnergyCatalyzer3; January 16, 2012)
