Defkalion Claims "No Problem" with Revealing Cold Fusion Catalyst
The former partner company of Andrea Rossi, Defkalion Green Technologies, has stated that upon licensing, they will openly reveal the catalysts used in their Hyperion Ni-H cold fusion systems. This is of course if they even have a working system, or one that is not based on Leonardo Corporation's technology.
CORRECTION: (January 4, 2011; 10:00 pm MST)
We were informed today by someone allegedly involved with Defkalion that
they do not have a catalyst in their system, and that their posting to
that effect was meant as humor, as some of the other statements in that
same posting (were clearly humor). |

Pure Energy Systems News
Andrea Rossi's E-Cat (Energy Catalyzer) technology is a breakthrough in cold fusion research. It is so phenomenal, it could be considered as the "Holy Grail" that cold fusion researchers have been seeking for the past two decades.
Defkalion Green Technologies is a company that was formerly a partner of Andrea Rossi's, until their contract with Leonardo Corporation was terminated -- over a breach of contract. Now, Defkalion claims to have developed their own cold fusion technology that does not use Andrea Rossi's catalyst. In a recent statement on their forum, they claim that upon licensing the Hyperion technology, they will reveal the identity of their catalysts to the world.
So what makes Andrea Rossi's E-Cat technology so significant? There are many things that make it everything cold fusion researchers have hoped for, and more. First of all, it produces a huge amount of output from reactor cores with a very small volume. In one setup, a reactor core the size of a D-Cell battery can produce a maximum safe output of ten kilowatts or 10,000 watts. This is far beyond the couple of watts (or at most 10-50) that most other cold fusion systems have been capable of producing. Secondly, the E-Cat technology does not use expensive heavy hydrogen (deuterium) or precious metals such as platinum or palladium. Instead, it uses cheap nickel powder and ordinary hydrogen gas, along with one or more proprietary catalysts. Thirdly, the technology does not produce radioactive waste of any kind, or emit any pollution. Finally, the tiny amount of radioactivity it does produce is easily shielded by a few millimeters of shielding, and the radioactivity ceases immediately after the devices is shut off.
A few additional bits of information about the E-Cat technology have been revealed over the past year. We have learned that Andrea Rossi has developed a very low cost method of enriching the nickel powder so that contains more of two specific isotopes, Ni-62 and Ni-64. These two isotopes are claimed to be the ones that interact with the hydrogen gas to produce fusion reactions. The enrichment process is claimed to be so cheap, that it only adds ten percent to the cost of the nickel powder. It has also been revealed that Rossi treats the nickel powder (micron size) in such a way that tubercles are produced that extend from the surface of the grains. This increases the number of reaction sites where the cold fusion processes take place.
One of the most recent revelations is that he uses a radio frequency generator to control the output of the system. There are many theories floating around about how the radio frequency generators stimulate or control the reactions that take place in the reactor core. One hypothesis claims that the radio frequencies promote the splitting of molecular hydrogen into atomic hydrogen, which is what interacts with the nickel powder. Other theories claim that the radio frequencies produce an induction heating effect which somehow contributes to the fusion processes. However, it should be noted that the radio frequency generator is not vital to his technology. He claims that an E-Cat could work with a Bunsen Burner as a heat source.
Of course the big difference between Andrea Rossi's E-Cat technology and many other cold fusion technology are the catalysts he uses. These catalysts are said to help split apart the molecular hydrogen into atomic hydrogen. He has stated without these catalysts (which are one or more elements placed into the reactor core in addition to the nickel and hydrogen) his technology would be no different than many others that do not produce practical amounts of power. The catalyst seems to be the main reason he can produce kilowatts of power, instead of only tens of watts.
Not long ago it was revealed that the President of Defkalion, Alexandros Xanthoulis stated in correspondence with
NyTeknik that he had the secret of Andrea Rossi's technology. He actually admitted that the secret of the technology was acquired without Andrea Rossi's knowledge, but he was not going to use it to develop their own technology. Here are a few important segments of the
quote.
"Lets say I have the formula of Rossi, but Im not saying it officially. My scientists found a way to make it. They need three months, but Im not going to play game behind Rossi. Im not a cheater. We started together and if he has to be paid, he will. But his problem is scientifically solved by us.
"I know what hes got in the reactor, I know everything. It was a spectroscopy (Greek: fasmatoscopy) made by the university of Siena. It was an equipment made by the University of Siena. It understands everything thats inside the reactor. So we know the components."
[Editors Note: Defkalion now claims that the university where they had the spectroscopy performed was not the University of Siena, but the University of Padua. I find this suspicious, because the University of Siena is where one of Rossi's potential competitors, Piantelli, has done research. I can't help but wonder if Defkalion did the spectroscopy with Piantelli's help.] |
Now, Defkalion claims to have developed their own cold fusion technology that uses nickel and hydrogen. Although I think there is room for everyone in the cold fusion market, I find it hard to believe they have developed such a technology in only a few months, unless they are using the information they discovered about the E-Cat. It took Andrea Rossi years to fully develop his technology and to find the best catalysts. I find it hard to believe that Defkalion would just ignore what they discovered about his technology, while developing their own.
Defkalion To Reveal Catalyst Upon Licensing
Although it is impossible to determine if Defkalion is using a catalyst(s) solely of their own design, a catalyst developed with the help of what they found out about the E-Cat, or if they are just using Rossi's catalyst(s) without his permission, it seems we may learn the identity of their catalyst in the not too distant future.
In a recent post on their forum, Defkalion stated that after their Hyperion technology is licensed, they will have no problem listing the entire contents of the reactor (including the catalysts) on the case of the device -- just like beverage makers do.
Here is the quote.
| As for the "catalysts" involved in the multi-stage processes of the reactions, we will have no problem to write their names on the Hyperion's product plates, as Coca Cola or Pepsi are doing with their self-destructive products. Of course this will happen following the licensing of Hyperions. Then silvio.caggia can address his speculative questions to others to get his answers. |
If Defkalion reveals the identity of a catalyst (regardless if it is their own or Rossi's catalyst) that can allow for kilowatts of heat to be produced from tiny cold fusion systems, it could create problems for Andrea Rossi -- who originally developed the catalyst(s). The need to keep the identity of the catalyst secret is obvious. For example, he did not release the "theory" of how the E-Cat works at the test of the one megawatt plant in October like he had previously planned. He stated he did not share the theory because it would have given away too much proprietary information. Recently, he claims that he will not be able to release the catalyst and theory until the patent has been granted. Exactly which patent he is referring too is not clear, because he claims to have filed multiple, different patents. At least one of them is not yet accessible by the public.
Perhaps Defkalion does not mind sharing the identity of the catalyst, because they don't think they can claim it as their own intellectual property. This might be the case if Andrea Rossi has already filed a patent on it. I hope they are not trying to play "hardball" with Rossi. It would be awful if they are making such statements in hope that he will re-instate the contract with them, in exchange for them keeping the catalyst confidential -- instead of engraving it on every unit they sell. Another possibility I've heard is that they may be forced to reveal the catalyst and have it placed on the public record, to obtain the certifications needed to sell domestic Hyperion units in the European Union. Of course this is conjecture, and we do not know the real reason why they are willing to release the identity of the catalyst.
Of course, one thing that needs to be mentioned is that Rossi told us on December 31 that he plans on launching one million 10 kilowatt home E-Cat units by Autumn of this year. If this takes place, the catalyst will be stolen. It does not matter how good of a self destruct system is placed in the device, someone will be able to get a sample of the core material. Not long afterwards, the contents of the core will be posted on the internet for everyone to read. I'm not promoting anyone participate in such potentially criminal behavior, because it would be violating Andrea Rossi's intellectual property. However, it is something I think is bound to happen. One million units are just too many targets to keep from those who would participate in industrial espionage. Perhaps Defkalion realizes this too, and thinks it would be futile to try and keep the catalyst secret after they start selling large quantities of units.
In Rossi's case, his statement to us on December 31 indicates he is not worried about such reverse engineering: "Making 1 million pcs and very low prices, the reverse engineering becomes a hobby, like to make yourself your car or your computer."
One item I would like to note is that Defkalion has stated on their forum that they do not like the conjecture and theories that some people are posting. I would respond by saying that if they would be more straitforward (instead of posting comments that sound like they have been prepared by a lawyer) there would be far less speculation taking place. The fact that Rossi posts his own comments on his blog -- speaking clearly without a lawyer reviewing every word -- is significant to me. It shows that he is more concerned with telling the truth and sharing the facts, than making sure he has a lawyer prepare all his statements.
A Revealed Catalyst
If Defkalion has obtained Rossi's catalyst or developed their own, and if they share it openly, it would be a huge revelation. Such information could allow for countless other companies and groups to start building working, practical cold fusion devices. There are already rumors going around the internet about what the catalyst might be, but they are all just rumors. All we know from Rossi is that the catalyst is cheap, plentiful, non-radioactive, commonly-available, not a precious metal, not Raney nickel, and not iron or copper.
Since the basic construction of an E-Cat is so simple, a black market could open up for pirated Ni-H systems. Right now in China there are thousands of bicycle shops that convert regular bicycles into electric, battery powered bicycles. I could imagine thousands more shops opening up that build Ni-H units to power homes and vehicles. Perhaps a sort of open source network would emerge. I could imagine forums on the internet where E-Cat builders talk about Ni-H systems they are building, share all sorts of hints, and post tips for construction.
At first, you might think this would be bad for Rossi and Defkalion, in that suddenly there would a surge of competitors using their technology in an unlicensed manner. However, which ever one of them is on the market first with a mass produced product could have an advantage over everyone else. I think that it might be cheaper and more practical in many situations to buy a mass-produced, official E-Cat than to build your own. Also, Rossi has stated that he is going to out price any competitors, by selling units at a low price that no one will be able to match. Furthermore, the need for such technology is so vast, it's hard to imagine that "competitors" would be getting in each other's way any time soon.
I also think Rossi's name recognition, and the fact he is the inventor of the technology will serve to his benefit. In my opinion, Andrea Rossi could end up being the next American folk hero -- perhaps even more so than Ron Paul. If a lawsuit starts between Rossi and Defkalion over the technology, I think that Rossi would have the most public support. Judging from what I've encountered online while covering this topic over the past year, I would say that there are hundreds of sites that have sprung up specifically to cover the topic of the E-Cat, but there are very few, if any, "Hyperion" themed sites. We've been tracking at least 17 dedicated E-Cat news sites in our weekly E-Cat news recaps.
(Link) Everyone seems to associate practical Ni-H cold fusion technology Andrea Rossi's E-Cat. This is not the case with Defkalion's Hyperion.
Perhaps one of the most important things to remember here is that there is room enough for EVERYONE in the energy market to sell Ni-H products. It would take both Rossi and Defkalion many years to sell enough E-Cat and Hyperion units to meet the demand that will exist. Although I think it is completely inappropriate and unethical if Defkalion is using a catalyst that is in any way a result of their analysis of the E-Cat technology, I still consider it a shame that these two parties had to spit up. A partnership between the two would have benefited everyone.
Andrea Rossi has made it clear repeatedly that he never wants to be associated with Defkalion again. This is unfortunate, but I can't say that I blame him -- especially if Defkalion is using his technology without his permission, or developed a similar technology using info they gained from performing an analysis of the contents of an E-Cat reactor core.
I think there is a bigger issue than a potential lawsuit between these two companies. If Andrea Rossi's patents are not granted, other companies that have already tried to claim ownership could take both Defkalion and Leonardo Corporation to court. The nightmare scenario would be a situation in which after the launch of the first round of products, all cold fusion reactor production is put on hold due to legal conflicts. My hope is that in such a situation, the government and court officials involved would recognize how Andrea Rossi is the individual who turned cold fusion from an amazing novelty into a practical technology, and grant his patent applications. For this to happen, the public would need to organize and get behind him, and demand that his status as inventor of the technology be recognized.
What is the Catalyst?
As much as I recognize Andrea Rossi's need for secrecy, I cannot help but be curious about the nature and identity of the catalyst(s). His so called "secret sauce" allows for a huge amount of energy to be produced in a safe manner, without producing radioactive waste, without emitting pollution, and while consuming tiny amounts of cheap fuel. The scifi-geek in me is more curious about the identity of this phenomenal catalyst, than I was about the details of a faster than light warp core in the "Technical Guide to the Starship Enterprise" as a teenager. Of course the difference is that the E-Cat is a REAL WORLD technology, which makes it infinitely more significant than any work of fiction.
What do you think the catalyst(s) might be? Do you have any guesses? Have you heard any interesting rumors lately about the identity of the secret sauce?
