E-Cat Weekly -- December 8, 2011

The past 9 days-ish, have seen around 35 unique stories posted about Andrea Rossi's E-Cat from the near dozen dedicated sites as well as from at least 9 mainstream sources. The main highlights include Rossi agreeing to do a live, streaming video of a 1 MW plant; release of documents from NASA; a call by a MU vice chancellor to solve the cold fusion puzzle.

  • From US To Europe, Everybody Wants A Slice of ECat - As the E-Cat is getting more and more attention from different sectors, and last week, even a senator from Massachusetts, Bruce Tarr, has expressed intention to help in the development as well as marketing of the energy catalyzer device.   • Major US Newspaper Covers Andrea Rossi, Cold Fusion - The piece entitled Hope, Fusion for Cold Fusion in The Boston Globe was refreshingly free of the usual hype and exaggerated and unfounded claims by ignorant naysayers. (ColdFusion3; December 4, 2011)

  • eCat Cost To Half In One Year - A questioner on AR’s blog tries to break the quiet spell and gets us some minor intel to chew on. This is always welcome. We learn that AR sees a drop in the current price of 2K Euro per kW to 1K Euro within a year. (eCatNews; December 7, 2011)
  • Authorizing the [small] E-Cat - One of Andrea Rossi’s more frequent refrains is that household E-Cats will be available in about two years. From every indication he has given, the technological problems on how to build small unit have been solved, even to the point of being able to make electricity as well as heat. The main reason Rossi gives for this two-year timeframe is that he estimates it will take about this long to get the patents and safety authorizations from governmental bodies.   • MU research chief wants 'cold fusion' puzzle solved - Rather than squabbling over the merits of studying cold fusion or jumping to the conclusion that excess heat produced at room temperature is a nuclear reaction, the scientific community needs to back up — all the way to the top of the scientific method. That’s the opinion of Rob Duncan, vice chancellor of research at the University of Missouri. (Columbia Tribune; December 3, 2011)
  • Mizzou Prof. Pushes for Cold Fusion/LENR Research - University of Missouri vice-chancellor of research, Dr. Robert Duncan, has publicly come out in favor of a national fund for cold fusion/LENR research. In an article that appeared in the Missouri daily newspaper, the Columbia Daily Tribune, Dr. Duncan proposed a national fund to be spread study of the cold fusion/LENR phenomenon across the United States.   • Slides from Sept. 22 NASA LENR Innovation Forum Workshop Finally Released - Thanks to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by Steven Krivit, some slides from NASA's workshop on LENR (and the E-Cat) have been released, and they are quite enthusiastic in their review of the potential of cold fusion to revolutionize the energy landscape.   • NASA’s Bushnell: BTW LENR Solves Global Climate and Energy - The long-awaited details from Dennis Bushnell’s Sep 22, 2011 presentation have surfaced. They are still not on the official site (bottom of page) and I can’t find the original through Google, so I put a slight cautionary note here that the contents have yet to be verified… (eCatNews; December 2, 2011)
  • Rossi Open to Live Streaming Video of His E-Cat Technology - We’ve heard repeatedly from Andrea Rossi lately that there will be no more public tests or demonstration — he has said it takes to much time to put on, and it gives competitors opportunities to steal his technology.   • TEDxFtLaud cancelled; cold fusion talk with it - Dec. 10 TEDxFtLaud event at Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida has been cancelled. Cold Fusion Now’s own Ruby Carat was scheduled to speak on Commercial Cold Fusion: the Viable Alternative Energy at the all day event along with 11 other speakers on a variety of topics and 6 performers.   • To Buy E-Cat May Mean Buying a Nuclear Reactor - The problem with the Rossi energy catalyzer device being labeled as nuclear power can present some problems to Leonardo Corporation. (E-CatFusion; November 29, 2011)
  • Rossi Does Not Want Ecat To Be Labeled as a Nuclear Reactor - Italian inventor Andrea Rossi has never claimed that the Ecat is a nuclear reactor. His popular name for his invention is energy catalyzer device, shortened to ECat. It is also known as Low Energy Nuclear Reactor (LENR) but if you ask Rossi if it is a nuclear reactor, he will not give you a straight answer. (ECatReport; November 29, 2011)
  • E-Cat Fusion Is Definitely Low Energy Nuclear Reaction - Information coming out of the Citi5 site indicates that scientist Brian Ahern has finally gotten to the bottom of the physics question pertaining to the E-Cat fusion or Low Energy Nuclear reaction (LENR). LENR is now becoming a popular description for the power source of the future as the term cold fusion slowly becoming extinct. According to Ahern, what happens in this phenomenon is that the energy localization at the nano-scale circumvents the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. This is because nature has evolved to take advantage of the energy exchange mechanisms that is only available at this size scale. This phenomenon was already identified in 1996 as “Oscillons in relation to Chaos Theory”, but it has not been fully understood until now. (E-CatFusion; December 5, 2011)
  • Interesting Year Ahead for the E-Cat - [Re: Brian Ahern] However, an announcement states that cold fusion is actually a Low Energy Nuclear Reaction (LENR). This means that the Rossi E-Cat unit is officially considered by a respected scientist as an LENR device. The source for this information is Citi5, where we learn about the Flash Summit to happen on December 7. It seems like LENR is becoming a more popular description for the power of the future as cold fusion becomes extinct. (ECatReport; December 1, 2011)
  • What Is Cold Nuclear Fusion? - It all started as an attempt to change base metals into precious metals – lead into gold! These were the ‘Alchemists’ who were the precursors to modern chemists.   • Scientific Cultist Antonio Turiel Bashes the E-Cat - A physicist has written a blatantly closed minded, arrogant, and pathologically skeptical article about the E-Cat (Energy Catalyzer.) His blatantly false statements confirm the fact that many so called "mainstream" scientists have become little more than mind controlled cultists. (PESN; December 2, 2011)
    • No miracles in science: The story of the "energy catalyzer" - After a long period of review, energy journalist Antonio Turiel gives his reasons for why he has concluded that the E-Cat cannot be what it is claimed to be; that is, a device that produces useful energy from nuclear reactions.   • E-Cat: Is it Cold Fusion or Hot Air? - An interview with Mark Gibbs, who has written articles about the E-Cat for Forbes. If real, "it would transform the planet" providing super cheap energy. "The consequences would be staggering." (NTTCom.tv; December 3, 2011)
  • How to Make Cold Fusion Work: Use Unobtainium - To date, there have been several demonstrations of E-Cat devices but as none of the test setups were examined by independent acknowledged experts under scientific conditions, the results, while ostensibly promising, have been definitely inconclusive. As far as can be determined, at least from what Rossi has revealed, the E-Cat has no downside. None at all. (Forbes; November 28, 2011)

Australian Company Claims to have a Working Fusion Reactor - Out of Cleantech via Al Fin Energy comes a hint of a nuclear fusion company more fantastic than the Rossi E-Cat.  While the E-Cat is already looking at manufacturing facilities, the newest drama comes from Australia. Authors of a fresh Kachan report on new, safer, cleaner nuclear technology interviewed dozens of scientists at nuclear research outfits.  Almost all fusion organizations are either pursuing big, capital-intensive tokamaks or other smaller more innovative reactors. One interviewee in a face-to-face conversation with the Kachan folks in a location abroad, told of a small company he’s involved with that he claims has built a working 1MW fusion reactor the size of a rice cooker.     • Defkalion Announces 5kW Hyperion LENR Product Specs - Today, Defkalion, the Greek break-way from Andrea Rossi, announced the pre-industrial prototype specs for their Hyperion, which is described as a 5 kW heat-producing chemically-assisted, low-energy nuclear reactor. They are negotiating licensing contracts for its rollout, expected to reach the market in 2012. However, no demonstration was performed, and no test data was released. Also, we have no way of knowing if they are simply using the E-Cat technology without Rossi's permission.     • Defkalion: "We have Rossi’s formula" - The Greek company, Defkalion told NyTeknik that they ran spectroscopic analysis of the E-cat at Siena University in August without Rossi's knowledge, and that is how they discovered and improved upon the secret, so that their "Hyperion" product to be unveiled tomorrow will be very different from the E-Cat.       • Has Defkalion's President Confirmed the Accusations of Rossi and Stremmenos? - The Swedish magazine NyTeknik has shared details of a phone conversation with the president of Defkalion, Alexandros Xanthoulis. If the transcription of his statements is accurate, they seem to confirm Andrea Rossi's statement that the Greek company was never "given" the information to do so but extracted it covertly.     • Falling Into the Lattice - Approaching the presentation on Dec. 7th at the Citi5 Flash Summit by Dr. Brian Ahern, I feel as though the rabbit hole is looming large as the Mad Hatter, babbling in Italian with a steaming tea kettle in hand, urges me one step beyond the matrix and into the lattice. Yet, his steam has water droplets clearly visible making a weak tea indeed, and, yes, the crazy Greeks ride a Cadillac of gold…or nickel. Utah Mainstream News Silent

I've been tracking the E-Cat since January, using tools such as Google News alerts along with readers sending me notice. But I have not seen a single mention from any Utah mainstream news services, even though the Pons and Fleishmann announcement back in 1989 was made from the University of Utah. You would think they would weigh in on this follow-up this many years later.

On November 28, I sent an email individually to the Salt Lake Tribune, Deseret News, KSL, KTVX, ABC4, KCPW, KUED, TV20, Fox13, KUTV, City Weekly, recommending that they ought to weigh in on the development. But so far, none of them have.

The only Utah coverage (besides from PESN) has come from our local county paper, the Sanpete Messenger.

Dear A.Casali:
1- At the price we apply now the 1 MW plant pays back itself in 3 years. The expected life is 30 years. Anyway, we foresee to lower the price with the increase of the orders, to allow more economy scale. Our target is to arrive within the year to 1000 Euro/kW.
2- We are working on this issue, see point 1.
3- yes [the industrialization process going to lower the price considerably in the short term]
4- As soon as possible, when the Customer will allow it. Consider that when the name of a Customer of us is published, he is buried under thousands of inquiries, emails, insults, together with good considerations. It is not an issue as easy as you can think. We all need to work in peace, and we have an army of enemies who want to forbid this. Among them the wannabe “third parties who have to make a real test” ( which turned out to be all competitors or consultants of them, what a strange coincidence!)
5- I am holding nothing, we are already making our R&D with all our Consultants, and our Customers are accepting our technology already. They don’t care too much who is testing our plants, they care the plants work properly, that’s all they want.
