Automobile manufacturers go to tremendous lengths to increase the fuel efficiency of their vehicles. They search for lighter materials, design aerodynamic shapes to reduce drag, embed computers that continually make adjustments to the engine, and include complicated fuel injection systems. In recent years, "hybrid" cars with both internal combustion engines and electric motors have hit the market. For all of this work the results have been minimal. Even the highly acclaimed Honda Prius only gets around fifty to sixty miles per gallon at best. A potential solution that could provide much higher gas mileage (among other benefits) is the Wave Disk Engine.
This Wave Disk Engine is unlike any conventional internal combustion engine. It does not utilize pistons, crankshafts, valves, cooling systems, spark plugs, and many other components of conventional engines. A transmission would not even be needed! Instead, it utilizes a circular disk with many curved channels. Fuel and air enter through inlets positioned around the center of the disk. As the rotor spins, the fuel in each channel is suddenly blocked from escaping. This results in a rapid build up of pressure which results in a shock wave being generated. The shock wave causes the fuel to ignite. As the rotor continues to spin and the chamber reaches an outlet, the hot gases from the combusted fuel are able to rapidly exit. This produces a thrust that makes the disk spin.
The benefits reaped by a vehicle using this technology would be many. Due to the reduced number of parts, the weight of a vehicle could be dramatically reduced. It has been estimated for the same horsepower, a Wave Disk Engine could weigh a thousand pounds less than a conventional engine. This weight savings could translate into additional fuel savings or could be used to add additional features to the vehicle. Perhaps with such a weight reduction, vehicle bodies could actually be made of strong materials again, instead of fiber glass which crumples in even the most gentle of fender benders. Could we see a resurgence of large metal bumpers?
Of course having fewer parts does not only save weight, but also means there are less components that need maintenance, repair, or replacement. This would probably save an end user quite a bit of money. There would be no need for oil changes every 3,000 miles, no need for new spark plugs during tune ups, no need to add anti-freeze, and hopefully fewer embedded computers. Mom and pop car repair garages might actually be able to work on new vehicles again, without thousands of dollars in sophisticated computerized diagnostic equipment!
The "greenest" and most ecologically in tune enviro-gurus of our age should also like this engine. Most internal combustion engines (ICE) only convert about 20% of their fuel into energy.
The Wave Disk Engine is thought to be able to increase this figure up to 60% or higher. The practical result could be a MPG rating of three to four times that of today's vehicles. In an age of ever increasing gasoline prices, this could help keep the average person's wallet a bit heavier.
In addition to all the above benefits, the technology is also claimed to produce 90% less emissions than ordinary internal combustion engines. This means less smog and air pollution in big cities, less CO2 being poured into the atmosphere, and cleaner air for everyone. For the average person, owning a vehicle using this technology could make emission checks a breeze and perhaps even earn them some carbon credits.

is the inventor of the Wave Disk Engine. His current prototype is very small, but he hopes to build a larger version capable of powering a car by the end of the year. He was recently awarded a $2.5 million dollar research grant

Instead of powering a vehicle, the Wave Disk Engine could also provide the mechanical energy to turn the rotor of an electrical generator. It would be capable of producing electricity at a far lower rate of fuel consumption than any traditional generator on the market. This could provide significant cost savings for people living off the grid. Additionally, this aspect of the Wave Disk Engine would make it ideal for use in hybrid vehicles that require an ICE. However, once this technology matures I'm not sure hybrid vehicles (even incorporating this technology) would make financial sense anymore.
A few other features of this technology include its ability to be scaled up and down in size, experience less physical stress than internal combustion engines, can be designed to burn hydrogen, and could be built at a much lower costs. Not only could a vehicle using this technology provide tremendous fuel savings, but could also cost less up front as well! This would be a great benefit in an economy where unemployment is high, the personal savings rate is low, and credit is hard to come by.
Still Slurping Down Chemical Fuel
The only obvious drawback to this technology is that it still burns chemicals for fuel. Humanity needs to grow beyond this old, tired paradigm. As Nikola Tesla once stated...
"No matter what we attempt to do, no matter to what fields we turn our efforts, we are dependent on power. We have to evolve means of obtaining energy from stores which are forever inexhaustible, to perfect methods which do not imply consumption and waste of any material whatever. If we use fuel to get our power, we are living on our capital and exhausting it rapidly. This method is barbarous and wantonly wasteful and will have to be stopped in the interest of coming generations."
Tesla developed a technology that collected energy from aether all around us. He demonstrated how it could be use to provide free energy to the entire world. In addition to his large towers that broadcast longitudinal waves to remote receivers, he also built a small device that powered an electric vehicle (his famous Pierce Arrow). Unfortunately, the powers that be conspired to shut him down. His legacy and technology lives on, but at this time some of his most important discoveries are not broadly utilized. If not for the greed of the energy moguls of his era, the utilization of free energy from the aether could have made the past one hundred years transpire very differently.
Thankfully, there are many exotic technologies emerging (a few of which utilize aspects of Nikola Tesla's work) that could free us from the need to chemically burn fossil fuels. Some of these upcoming technologies include

PlasmERG noble gas motor,
Andrea Rossi's cold fusion technology, David K's over-unity
Device", motors that harness gravity to produce power, and many others.
As a species, we need to "master the wheel work of nature" and stop burning chemical fuels for energy. There are too many other sources of energy that are inexhaustible we could be tapping into to power our civilization. Nikola Tesla realized this over a hundred years ago! The fact we are still using up deletable resources to produce energy is a tragedy.
Perhaps as a stop-gap measure until other more exotic technologies emerge, the Wave Disc Engine should be developed and utilized. It clearly provides many benefits and is an engineering marvel. However, in the medium to long term, it is simply unacceptable. There are BETTER alternatives, some of which are coming very soon!
