Al Witherspoon on Howard Johnson, Famous Magnet Motor Inventor
Al Witherspoon has been a neighbor, friend and associate of Howard Johnson since 1978, when he first witnessed his all-magnet motor running, until Jan. 2008 when Johnson passed away.
The following was written to Sterling by Al Witherspoon on
March 25, 2009; 3:00 AM EST.

Mylow. He's certainly a gracious sort of fellow.
Perhaps soon I will be able to submit some sort of write-up about Howard. Given my inability to be short stated and concise it might very well approach book status. While he was with us there didn't seem to be very much interest. Now that he has passed on perhaps that will change as it does with many unknown artists.
I have been thinking for quite some time that somebody other than myself would almost certainly be able to provide considerably more information as I feel my qualifications may not make me worthy. I have searched the net but have only found general histories and excerpts from the magazine publication which presented him in 1980. Surely there's more.
Perhaps there are others who will be able to contribute their experiences. I have been trying to contact some individuals who were directly involved with him on the project but for some reason they have thus far chosen to remain hidden and unresponsive. It's therefore time for a new approach.
Howard was an extraordinary yet quiet man, just trying to lead an ordinary life,
giving to others whatever he could. In his speech as well as his associations he was soft spoken and gentle but not without wit and humor. He spent most of his life contributing to the benefit of others by various means. He even helped directly in an on-hands fashion with the foundation of the University of Virginia at Wise, soliciting funds and pounding nails.... But it seems as though nobody wants to hear this stuff.
About his only contacts in the latter years were with some Church members every Sunday and his friend Willy. For the most part he was way over the heads of most of the simple country folk that he was surrounded by.

There is probably enough information available that it would eat up a good portion of a tree.
Approaching the final short years of his life Howard was perhaps a bit beaten up emotionally, having had his intellect and good nature viciously and repeatedly challenged. After the theft of his prototypes and much of his sensitive paperwork the wind no longer seemed to be in his sails. He spent the majority of his time just sitting in his chair. I have no idea what his thoughts were at those particular moments but whenever a visitor would arrive he always rolled out the red carpet. It appeared that research had pretty much come to a halt. Our conversations at that time took a different direction or were repeats of previous discussions about mostly things of a purely cosmic nature.
Howard told me more than once in the last months of our contact and once previously long ago that he did not think that the world was ready for this
technology. I never could quite grasp exactly what he meant but it was along the lines of two things: One being that the greed of mankind in general would cause a
debilitating fight over it, and the other being that a time of economic collapse would need to occur before it would be permitted. This actually makes some sense, and it's certainly not some Biblical prediction. It's reality. Considering:
You gotta ask yourself... what effect on the stabilization of an oil based economy would the introduction of 'free' or 'near free' energy have? Then ask the same question supposing that an
economy has already collapsed.
Howard said that he felt that he would not see the finalization of his work and said that he knew that there would be someone to continue it. He said that the person would be Shiloh. Oh geez, I thought to myself, there he goes again with that out in left field Biblical stuff. I ask him if it's a scientist that he knows. He says that he is a scientist that nobody will know and you must watch for him and help assure his success.
Many years ago Howard mentioned that if people would just simply read and follow directions a little bit that they could easily reproduce his work and do it on an individual basis in their garage. He went on to say that of all the people who were trying to steal it and exploit it, they would be thwarted by the simple mind and innocence of a child. Certainly he was speaking figuratively I thought. How does he come up with this stuff, I thought to myself.
Oh, this is just too much!!

Nobody wants to hear this stuff but it is the truth and it will print, though a lot of people seem to want to run when they hear such stuff. I will do what I was instructed to do.
Over thirty years, there are a lot of little bits and pieces. So far I think there are about forty pages here
worth.
