Finally, we may have found a 24-7 clean energy device that is available for purchase, capable of powering a home (3 kW), yet looks like a conventional device.

Back in 2001 when I was first involved in disruptive clean energy technologies,
we used to brainstorm how we could introduce these technologies to the market in
a less threatening way. One of the things we discussed was adding solar
panels or wind turbines to the module to make the thing appear like a
conventional renewable energy source, while in reality, the module was not at
all dependent on wind but was harnessing free environmental energy of another
variety altogether. Neighbors and utilities would see the solar panels or
wind turbine and think nothing of the home running on renewable power.
Available
Well, today I learned of just such a product that is now said to be available -- a wind
turbine that doesn't need the wind, but actually gets its energy from some kind
of electromagnetic phenomenon available constantly, 24/7.
Invented by Jim Boswell of Fresno, California, the B800 supposedly sells for
$15,000, and produces nearly 3,000 Watts continuously, plus or minus around 200
Watts -- easily enough to supply power for a 2,000 square foot home. Installation
typically runs between $300 and $500, and has not gone above $1000.
Shipping costs are on top of that. He
also supposedly sells a B1500, which he says puts out 30 kW, for commercial
customers. The installation costs for the B1500 are about the same as for
the B800. The units come with at least a 5-year warranty.
He's also wanting to do some larger units and installations of as high as 4
megawatts in size.
Net Metering
According to Boswell, if at any point during the day you need more than what the B800 or B1500
provide, then you pull from the grid. If you need less than that, you send
power back to the grid. Depending on your usage, at the end of the month,
your power company will probably owe you for the net amount you've sent back to
them. Most homes could get ahead with just a 2,000 Watt generator, and
this one is said to produce 3 kilowatts, continuously, not up and down with the weather.
The best case scenario for wind generation production is "on" about
15-20% of the time on average. The best case of Sun energy is 1/3 of the
24-hour day, and a comparable output of 3 kw, is going to cost $30-40,000
installed. When weighing the $5/Watt installed price for the B800,
remember that this generator is claimed to provide a steady, continuous output. No up or down;
just constant energy at nearly 3 kilowatts Hence the quicker return
on investment.
Depending on the cost of electricity, Jim says the unit can pay for itself in
just 1-2 years. Everything after that is free, if not profit from
producing extra electricity. Whether the wind is blowing zero or sixty
miles an hour, the unit output is the same.
Jim said that he put the wind turbine in the original design as a way to
self-start the system. However, he said that it turns out that the system doesn't even need
that, but that he kept it in there in order to keep the "wind
turbine" classification for energy credits.
Wind Incentives
Because it is a "wind turbine", says Boswell, you can take advantage of the
incentives available, depending on what state or country you're in, speeding up
the payback period. Also, you're not going to be inundated with questions
from neighbors or the utilities. You don't have to wait for the government
to validate and come up with some new classification of energy device to include
in their incentives. It's not like this is deceptive or fraudulent.
It's still very much in keeping with the spirit of the incentives to encourage
renewable energy installation.
Most importantly, you are gaining independence while cleaning the
environment. The unit produces no pollution, consumes no fuel, and
requires very little maintenance. And according to the inventor, it isn't up and down with the wind
or sun. It's constant.
In Production
To get this ready for production, Jim said he has been working with a company in China
that he worked with previously on another project (a luxury boat). They
were looking out for him, encouraging him to get his patent, even paying for it. They
supposedly can deliver
100,000 of these new B800 units with just a 60-day lead time. Jim says he
has access to a warehouse as well as the know-how for running a warehouse, to
run that kind of volume of sales through.
He said there is a 90,000 square foot Sing Gau (sp?) facility outside Shanghai
that is being powered entirely by this technology.
He said he's sold "a few hundred" of these since late 2007, a few
dozen of them in the U.S., mainly in the Midwest, and the rest
internationally. He said lead time for delivery is presently 30 - 45 days,
coming in from China.

Jim tells the following account of his personal history. Ten years ago, while working as a
lineman, he had a very serious accident. He was electrocuted with 16,000
volts, and fell to the ground, breaking his neck and femur, along with other
bones. He had to actually "rewire" his brain, as he puts it, in
order to think, using parts of his brain that he didn't use before.
His family and friends call his recovery "miraculous." While
they say his personality hasn't changed, some of his cognitive abilities are
very different. He used to have a hard time drawing something as simple as
a stick figure, but now he is able to draw fairly complex diagrams.
This wind turbine that doesn't need the wind isn't the only invention he's come
up with. We're talking to him about another design that, if real, is even more
amazing -- more compact, more output -- which we have encouraged him to quasi
open-source. As if the above technology isn't enough, that one could
totally change the landscape of energy and economics, with enough power to run a
400 HP pick-up truck, requiring no fuel, while costing less than $500 in parts,
and being relatively simple to build. 400 HP
is roughly equivalent to 300,000 Watts, enough to run 100 households at 3,000 Watts continuously.

Jim also claims to have a hybrid wind/solar technology for powering streetlights and
parking lot lights, which he says could save the city of Fresno $40 million
annually (including savings from copper wire thefts), or the state of California
$80 billion annually, or the U.S. $800 billion annually -- nearly the amount of
the recent stimulus package.
Jim says he has been running his own home on the B800 device for several months and has
been earning credits from Pacific Gas & Electric, which he cashes in with a
local restaurant who wants the credits. Jim's home has the typical
appliances including a big screen TV, plus a Jacuzzi. He said that the
neighbors sometimes comment something to the effect that the wind must be much
stronger up above his house because his blades are spinning while there is no
apparent wind on the ground. (Note: the turbine is apparently not visible
from the street, per someone who drove by.) Jim said that one neighbor now has one of these installed on his home.
While these technologies, if real, are advanced from anything else available today, Jim
said he believes in the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid) principle, and that
they are not very complicated.
In the extracurricular realm, Jim is a pillar in his community, having won the
National Jefferson Award in 2007 in D.C. for a non-profit he founded for
disabled children.
Strange Phone Calls
Jim said he has tried to contact media, motor and government officials from
local to national, but that so far the response has been essentially null -- at
least directly. Indirectly, he said he's started getting threatening phone
calls saying things like "stop building your equipment", letting him
know they know how many kids he has, etc. One night, someone was trying to
break into his garage, and he scared them off with his '45.
Since then, for security purposes, he's dismantled the fuelless motor
technology; but the patented "wind turbine" is still powering his
home. (He has not given us the patent number.)
Though he's wanted to have these things be a "Made in U.S.A." product,
he's met mostly deaf ears in the United States; but says he has garnered a lot of
interest in China, Japan, and South Korea.
About Boswell Distribution
Jim founded Boswell Distribution ten years ago around a fishing pole related
invention he made. He plans to establish other companies around these
newer technologies.

March 12 update:
I spoke with Jim again this evening. While he appreciates
the attention this is getting because of our coverage, we have
caught him at a busy time, compounded by some illnesses in the
family. He said he has some prior obligations he needs to
take care of through the next month before he can focus in on
moving this ahead at a more rapid pace. He plans to forward
on to me the validation material as it become available. |
March 26 update:
Jim has not yet provided any form of validating documents, photos,
videos, witness statements, testimonials, patent number; nor has he permitted any visits to an existing unit. He
finally returned a phone call today and said he's working on a
video. He said he's weighing his options for how to roll this out.
I think at this point, unfortunately, that I've been had by
another storyteller. |
