Claiming to bring together two billion people from seven continents, Live
Earth: Concerts for a Climate in Crisis is presently under way, having
commenced this morning in Sidney, set to endure for 24 hours, ending in Rio de
Janeiro, making this the biggest event concert in history.
The event, scheduled to bring attention to the human contribution to global
warming, and the need to live responsibly, is being broadcast exclusively online by MSN.
Unfortunately, the feed is a bit groggy. I don't think it's on my end
either. Perhaps a function of the large number of viewers. It has
cleared up a lot since the first hours.
Note that across the bottom of the screen at MSN
is a listing of the various
concerts, showing who is presently on stage, and who is up next. The
concerts overlap one another. I see also that the earlier concerts are
being rebroadcast, and that such is not noted on the channels display. I
know this both because I recognized one of the names of the bands that played
earlier, and the daylight/nighttime contradictions to actual. (Ref.)
I was amused to
see that Chevy is one of the three prominent sponsors of the MSN coverage,
positioning itself as a "green" company.
Compared to the kinds of far-reaching energy solutions we feature here at the
family of sites at PES Network, the "simple actions" promoted on the
"pledge" page are
baby steps, but taken on a large scale they will indeed make a tremendous
impact.
- Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights.
- Turn down thermostat 3 degrees.
- Inflate your car tires.
- Turn down the hot water heater.
- Choose your seafood wisely.
- Purchase EnergyStar-labeled appliances.
- Wash and rinse in cold water.
- Buy locally produced meats and produce.
- Drink more water from reusable glassware.
- Walk, bike, and carpool.
The Live Earth goal is to have one million make the above pledge.
Each band makes a few comments about global warming and personal responsibility
to make small, doable changes, which when spread across many millions doing the
same can result in huge savings. Between bands the stadium displays show
short clips, environmental advertisements and messages, and excerpts from
concerts elsewhere in the world; along with emcee announcements of the upcoming
band along with quips of their own about environmental clips.
Note
that one of the "featured videos" on the MSN list of Live Earth video
channels is an interview with Leonardo DiCaprio, who recently starred in Blood
Diamond (shown in the backdrop of the interview). This has particular
relevance to me in that my friend, Chris Patton, lived a situation that
closely resembled that story in Africa. Chris is presently working on a
documentary about new energy technologies, which will hopefully hit theaters by
the end of the year. We'll be telling you more about that movie in the
coming days. It's a truly exciting project that fulfills the dream we
envisioned last fall when we launched our documentary film project.
At one point in the Sidney Live Earth show, I looked up to see a man on stage pulling his pants back up.
I don't know what that's about, but I watched a movie last night, Dreamgirls,
a musical depiction of the live of Diana Ross; and in that movie one of the key
male singer's career came to and end when he pulled down his pants on live
television. That was years ago (if the film was based on a true story);
my, how far we've come?

I must say that the thing that troubled me the most was when during one of
the Sidney performances the band asked everyone present to raise a right fist in
the air, then said, "That looks really good from here." That
happens to be the Communist solute, and most everyone there would have known
that. Indeed the environmentalist movement tends to be on the left end of
the political spectrum (though not completely as in my case). This
troubles me for two reasons. First, it illustrates the "closet
Communist" phenomenon of the political left; and second, it illustrates the
dearth of conservative representation in the movement. This action is not
going to be endearing the conservative sector toward environmentalism.
The MSN site says that on July 8 they
will be posting concert highlights.
