The specter of famine arises from a system of agriculture that has become
dependent on the artificially-produced fertilizers. This is not a surprising
development, as these products have been heavily marketed, and all agricultural
colleges teach this system to students expected to implement these principles on
their farms.
However, organic and biodynamic farming systems specifically exclude use of
these NPK products. Instead, the emphasis is on replacing depleted trace
minerals, and biodynamicists also employ subtle energies to foster healthy
growth. (Ref.)
When the commercial products derived from fuels become unavailable or are priced
out of the market, turning back to the traditional methods could not only ensure
continuation of food production, but would also improve the food itself,
especially its nutritional and keeping qualities. I have noticed that while
chemically-produced carrots go moldy within weeks of being put in the
refrigerator, organic carrots in the same conditions grow small root-hairs and
keep themselves alive, resisting mould infection for months longer.
Growing plants exclusively with NPK forces growth, but leaves plants without
natural defenses. Continuing to grow them on soils depleted of trace minerals
results in plants vulnerable to insect and fungal attack, which are then the
excuse to apply more chemicals, causing death of the symbiotic micro-organisms
which should colonize the roots and aid in transport of nutrients. Crops can
take up only those minerals which are actually present in the soil, and as
levels decline, so does the quality of the food. People must then eat more to
gain the same level of benefit.
Being denied agri-chem products drove Cuba into organic farming in a big way. (Ref.)
The end result was a much healthier population and lower overall medical
expenses.
So, there could be a silver lining even in this storm cloud, but only if society
is able to wrestle Goliath politically.
If the looming famine is not to decimate humanity, the public must firmly and
loudly support the rights of farmers to use organic methods without
interference. Even more crucial is the inalienable right of the farmer to save
seed. Both of these wise and essential ancient practices are under threat from
the chemical industry, which wants a complete monopoly on seed sales, and no
competition from old-fashioned seeds.
Big companies especially dont want farmers to stop buying their products, and
therefore regularly attack and vilify alternative methods, attempting even to
hijack the definition of organic to include methods and chemicals which
are anathema to the organic movement. In contrast, organic was developed
to mean that life-friendly inputs and energies were the only kind utilized
throughout the growing, harvesting and shipping stages of the food business.
Because of legal decisions in favor of big business, this seed-saving has been
mowed down in the courts. (Ref.) What is
needed now is new right-to-farm laws around the world which will enshrine
seed-saving as a universal human right.
Not to do this invites the famine disaster, as the large companies controlling
hybrid and genetically-modified seed want to include the terminator gene
in their products. These gene means that the seed produced will be non-viable,
so that farmers cannot steal the companys intellectual property which
is how Monsanto views natural seed-saving. It is clear that many farmers will
not be able to afford to buy new seed every year, and will therefore lose their
land. This land will then be owned by the chemical giants, to be wrung out by
forced-growth farming with more and more chemicals until the land is too toxic
even for this to succeed.
Even if the proprietary gene jumped into a farmers crop due to
wild-card environmental factors such as wind, birds landing in the field, or
seed falling from a passing farm vehicle, the farmer in question is still
regarded as a thief, just as if hed gone out and stolen seed from someone
elses land.
It is time to restore the time-honored, successful farming by natures methods
which are proven successful from time immemorial. After all, the proof is
that the human race has survived for who knows how many millennia without
chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
We do not know if we will survive the era of the terminator gene. Engineered
genes can even jump from food eaten to cells in the body of the consumer. (Ref.)
Do we need this terminator gene in our bodies? Do we want it?
I think not!
But its coming, unless humanity bands together to stop this from being
deployed against us.
