Gary McAvoy, 43, Arrested while incarcerated on
another charge, June 1, 2005
NORWICH, CONNECTICUT, USA A suspect in the murder of Dr. Eugene Mallove,
was arrested Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 9:20 am for felony murder by detectives
of the Norwich Police Department.
Mallove, who was a resident of Norwich, was brutally murdered at his parents
home that he was checking in on after renters had moved out on May 14, 2004.
Because of his global high profile in the field of Cold Fusion and other
alternative energy approaches, and his post as the founder and editor of Infinite-Energy
magazine, his murder was considered by many to be probable foul play.
McAvoy was identified as a suspect early in the investigation however,
until recently, there was not enough evidence to support an arrest.
Additional evidence was developed by detectives leading to the arrest
warrant being signed. Police said the arrest is a result of an intensive
investigation conducted by the Norwich Police Department in conjunction with the
New London County States Attorneys Office. According to NBC30,
Dr. Henry Lee, who was recently brought in on the case to examine all the
evidence, is credited with having helped solved this case. Lee is famed
for his involvement in the difficult O.J. Sympson and Jon Benet Ramsey and
William Kennedy Smith cases.
McAvoy was arrested by warrant at court as he is incarcerated on an
unrelated case. He was presently incarcerated, serving a five-year sentence for
larceny. NBC30 reported that McAvoy has a criminal history including burglary. A
$1,000,000. bond was set on the warrant by the court.
Mallove's son, Ethan, whose wife gave birth to a first child after Eugene's
death, said, "We're very appreciative of law enforcement's efforts during
this past year, and we pray justice will be served."
McAvoy is incarcerated at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in
Suffield.
Police said the investigation remains open and no further details will be
released at this time.
